How do all fo you feel about Boy Scouts? (before everyone goes "RAWR NAZI SCOUTS GOVERNMENT AHHH" think of it this way I am the SPL of my troop, meaning i make most of the decisions, and I changed it into...anarchy scouts pretty much. the way it works is that we rely on eachother....it is a symbiotic relationship) back to camping We go camping once a month, the trip normally consists of half the people going for walks in the woods, getting lost(and stoned sometimes), and getting unlost by food time...the half that doesn't walk....cooks or does whatever. basically we do waht we want...and everyone loves it! thoughts? stories? opinions?(hippies normally have plenty of these =))
I've been a Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Cubmaster, Asst. Scoutmaster, Council Member, and Explorer Advisor. It was once a very good experience for all involved, but it's gotten so that in many places it's just free daycare. I've thought often about trying to start a new group similar to the original Baden-Powell scouts (but leaving out the emphasis on religion that seems to call so much trouble). Problem is that in our times, a 54-year-old man trying to start an organization for boys would get instantly labeled a pedophile. Damned shame.
Unless you call it something like "Armed American Defense Junior Rangers" and gave them all assult weapons. Then even without Jesus, you'd be a hero.
^ so true Good, so there aren;t as many closed minded people on these forums as on others. =) and to the 54 year old man, there is the venture crew. check that out. How often would your troops go camping?
Enjoyed the scouting experience in the late 60's Camped with the troop once a month between May and November. Had a big troop with lots of support. Did a lot of first aid training. Climbed Mt. Kathidin, Maine Mt. Marcy, NY. Canoed the Alagash, Me. and Fulton Chain, NY. Did Camp No be Bosco in the Adirondaks for 2 weeks in summer. Did a nice winter outing, stayed in a lodge ina snow covered mountain area. Good memories.
I was actually a scout in the 70s. I had long hair and was treated like an outcast. My plan worked. We went camping avery three months or so, but that was in Florida and you can do that there.
I was a scout in the 80s. It had it's ups and downs, but we went on some great outdoor trips. Overall I really enjoyed it. I felt proud to be a boyscout. I made some good friends there. We were always out camping and sleeping in tents. The hiking has stuck with me to this day.
Did any of you camp at Yawgoog? i got here every summer.... that is where i got my love for hiking too =) we unoficially named it hippy scouts because....well, we do hippy stuff, we bring our music and guitars on every campout and...well do hippy stuff hah anyone got funny stories?
I was a boy scout. Made it all the way to eagle. It gave me some great experiences and I learned some very usefull life skills. Went hiking at Philmont in New Mexico, canoed the boundry waters up north, the Niabrara river, and lots of other neat things. Its true they tried to push religion, and government and all that shit but aside from that it was a very positive thing for me.
I was a boyscout too for about 3 years i think and loved it. Our troop just focused on camping and having a good time and the scout leaders never pushed religion on us, the only thing religious about it is with your oaths and stuff. But i think any kid that wants to do some camping they should definitely join the boyscouts plus you can definitely learn some great stuff.
I was in Boy Scouts for a few years. Troop 560. I really enjoyed it and the other ppl in the troop were great. I made it to life scout and was assistant SPL and had I not moved during elections might have been SPL. I put off joining another troop for a year and a half and the troop i joined sucked. Most of the members were young and there was more emphasis on rank advancement than learning the skills and going camping (they didnt do real hiking trips and only went camping once every other month). I quit and while I still wish I could go camping and all that, i dont really miss it.
ahhh scouts - when i was young, i was in scouts but the scoutmaster was a gung ho marine type and i could not take him. years later my oldest son joined and i got involved & today he is an eagle scout!. as an adult i learned so much i wish i had learned when i was younger. we camped year round. if you ever told me i would enjoy pitching a tent on snow i would have said you were nuts, but hey, we did it many times and i did love it. it is a shame they will not let gay people take part. i do not care if you are gay, it's the friggin pedophiles you have to worry about!
I made it to eagle scout, and for th emost part, enjoyed scouting. Summer camp and camping gives nice respite to living in the city with parents, and hiking a longer trail meant hiking a little bit out of the way, setting up camp, and baking the tent.
I agree that gay scouts should be allowed to participate and not be ridiculed. Don't worry about pedophiles; worry is pointless. Kids should have as much fun as possible, but always be careful about who you let your child bond with or be with.
Thank you for your congrats. I think that done correctly scouts is one of the greatest organizations that anyone can belong to. I was a boy scout and loved it. I have friends who were girl scouts and loved it. Thats were I first started to learn about living on the earth and it got me to where I am today, an ecologist. I have seen some bad troop leadership though and that can really ruin a program. To anyone who is going to college or at college and enjoyed scouts or likes the ideals behind it(the real ideals of leadership, friendship, and service) check and see if your school has a chapter of Alpha Phi Omega, its a co-ed fraternity dedicated to volunteer service to others, building leardership, and promoting friendship. Don't let the word fraternity turn you off, its not that kind of frat, more of just a club, no house or anything, just service.
I was in the Boy Scouts since I was in second grade, and eventualy became an Eagle Scout and an Asst. Scoutmaster after I was 18. I think its an excellent opportunity for kids to get out into the wilderness and learn very valuable skills that wouldnt be presented to them otherwise. I'm all for the Boy Scouts, even with the implications of religion and authority, I think that for young kids trying to figure out what is moral and not and striving to be a "good Scout" by doing a good turn daily, the good weighs out the bad. I had a great time camping with my buddies, and learning how to start a fire with flint and steel, and how to "leave no trace" while camping. Anyway the Boy Scouts rocked in my opinion, Peace, Ziggy
I was a scout and after a year of really our troop doing very little switched over to C.A.P. and had a blast. Lots of camping, hikes, air shows, Mt. St. Helens fun, ect. I was really glad I got out of scouts. It was not the organizations fault but rather our lame ass den leader.
