Hi, I put my dreads in er 3 weeks ago and I've noticed something today that I hadn't noticed before. And I have never heard anyone mention this which is why I'm startled and worried.

At the roots/base of my dreads I can see lots of hair that has been pulled out of my scalp but is still knotted into the dreads. I can tell they were pulled out and not broken off because the hair follicles are still attached to the bottom. they look like white dots. I tried to take pictures but the batteries in my camera are dead and the camera in my phone doesn't pick them up.

The questions that are zipping past in my head are along the lines of, why is this happening, is this supposed to happen, how can i stop it, do i stop it, will the ripped out hairs ruin the dread, when the hairs regrow will they join the dread, how come no one mentioned this...

Please any and all help and clarification would be so very appreciated.

from my understanding, ripped out hair is perfectly normal, that and hair that falls out daily are supposed to stay in the dread, have you noticed those people that have really light colored tips but the bases are almost black/dark, most of the time its not from dying it, as the dead hair stays in there it loses its color and overtime will make it ligthen, now im not a pro but if this were a test question, thats what id put. and about the hair growing in, it should start to at a certain length, but my bangs werent dreaded (or they fell out or something) but then i cut them and they grew about 2 inches and were jsut hanging there, i didnt want them to get very long, it would look kinda weird, so i twisted the loose hairs into the closest dread and put a rubber band over that area, this is probably going to be highly debated here, but it works for me, just take em out after a month or so and it should be tight enough where they wont fall

yeah, that happens. I hate the way it looks. It kind of looks like dandruff.

On the bright side, that means your locks are fattening up.

As far as I know, anyway.

it hasnt happend to me at roots but I can notice in some of my dreads white specks. Especially the ones around my face for some reason. It alarmed me at first I thought it was bugs or dandruff (even though I've never had dandruff of any sort). But then I looked really really hard and realized that they were just folicles from hair that had fallen or gotten pulled out that were still on the hair.

So can you dye your hair to cover up the bits of scalp?
