OK. So it's a cable modem. Thats a start. Can you give me any more information?

Is it plugged into your computer and is the power cord plugged in?

Are you using an Ethernet cable or USB cable to connect to it?

Do you currently have, or are paying for active Internet Service?

What OS are you using? (hint: OS means Operating System)

Ok. So you have Windows and you are connected to the modem via Ethernet cable. But then you said:
Does this mean the cable modem isnt plugged into a cable TV outlet, or it isnt plugged into a power outlet?

Do you currently have Internet Service from the cable company?

To give you an idea of what plugs into where. The modem has 3 important plug-ins. First, you need to plug it into a cable TV outlet. Second, you need to have an Ethernet (RJ-45) plug-in from your computer to your cable modem. The Ethernet plug-in looks kinda like a phone jack but a little bigger (but dont try to use a phone wire cause they dont work). Third of all is easy. You need to plug the cable modem into a power outlet.

After you know everything is plugged in, unplug the modem and wait for the lights to go out on it. Then plug it back in. This will reset it and the ISP (Internet Service Provider) will renew your IP address.

After you do all of that, check over your connections and make sure nothing is loose. Restart your computer now (and I dont mean Standby, Sleep, or Hibernate mode). Give it a full restart. After it boots up and you get to the desktop, open Internet Explorer or Firefox (or any web browser) and check to see if it is online.

If it is not connected after you do that, we will try something better. Leave it all plugged in though.

Are you paying for active Internet service? As in a monthly bill?

Exactly, if you do not have a cable internet subscription, this will never work.
