I'm using Vista which is a great OS in my opinion, but I simply do not have the RAM to be meeting my own needs because all I have is 1GB ram but with the 128mb integrated video it reduces the system-available RAM to 896mb.

ADD the fact that Vista is a RAM hog (it's worst weakness), and the fact that I'm too cheap to buy some more ram, and you come out with the conclusion that I need a new OS.

I am hoping someone can tell me I can put a Macbook OS onto my laptop, but I have a nagging feeling that the Mac OS uses just as much RAM as Vista does.

I was looking at Ubuntu but I don't want something that I have to put codes into to start programs and shit I want to just be able to click and go, and I just want a basic Windows-like interface that looks nice and runs fast. I saw a few screenshots of Ubuntu and I liked what I saw visually but they also show how you need to throw out codes and binaries and shit lol and I don't want to do that.

One of you Alternative OS guys, HELP ME THE FUCK OUT MANG!

Why not just go with XP pro. Uses less RAM and still good.

FreeBSD, no coding required, and it has a gnome port

Ports are what you use to keep from having to code, although you can custom code if you want

What is it that you want to use your computer for? I ask because depending on what you want to do it is likely that using Ubuntu you will never have to type in code. Ubuntu is pretty easy to use for someone coming from Windows.

I'm using my laptop for everything... It's basically my PC.

I was thinking of switching back to XP but I'd have to go out and buy it and I don't want to spend all that money to go back in visual quality.

I really like the way Vista looks, and since I have a 1.6gHz AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-50, it would actually be much slower to switch back since it doesn't utilize the dual-cores the same way Vista does. I'm just saying that because it's what I heard, but I don't know how bad it really would be... I always thought it would just use one instead of two...

And I play games on it so thats why I'm looking for performance from my
    processor.

OH YEAH take note this is a laptop, that's why it's running the integrated card.

If you are wanting to play games then before switching to Linux do a search for the games you want to play and Linux to see if it is a pain, or even possible, to play those games on a Linux OS.

If you're a serious gamer, Linux isn't for you.

    PC BSD

PC BSD is the easiest OS to install. It is easier than Ubuntu. I kid you not. It is based on Free BSD. And FYI, OS X (the MacBook OS) is based on Free BSD too.

That, sir, is no longer the case. I am a very serious gamer and I do ALL of my gaming from within Linux. Sometimes emulated but never from Windows. I play UT, UT2k4, Counter Strike, Half-Life, Tremulous, and others all on Linux using a vendor specific video driver.

Linux has come a ways recently in gaming. Did you know that Unreal Tornament 3 is being released with a Linux client?... as expected.

There are many games that are supported natively by Linux but ppl dont know about them. Then there are games you can emulate. Finally, there are the games that are made FOR Linux but ported to Windows.

Yea, I used Cedega and Wine to play a lot of games but there are a few I had that I couldn't get to work. I did a dual boot so I could game on Windows, but Ubuntu was having trouble with the resolution after I installed my new video card so I gave up.

Twizz-I know very little about these things but I like going fast and with 1gig of ram'you should be flyin unless you have too much junk onboard. I have 1 gig of ram with 35o gigs of hard drives. I put all the system files on one drive and everything else on the other.I have AMD ATHLON 64 with XP HOME.
There has been times that I condidered another gig of ram also but after cleaning or formatting like I did the other day' then running it through PC PITSTOP' (free) it runs super fast. I have dsl but it runs like a cable connection. It's real nice to not wait on anything-Have you formatted the drive within the last year or so?-Run it through the battery of tests at PC Pitstop and see what they come up with-by reducing the size of cache files and system restore you add more speed and space-alot!-do their free tests before making any changes-it could be a simple fix.

1 gig of RAM is nothing for Vista. Vista's actual sweet spot is about 4 gigs from what I've read.

If you like the way Vista works but need it in a smaller package they made a skin for the whole XP Pro program so it appeared as Vista in everyway but without the bulk. Infact it was released before Vista was, lol

yeah that was Royale Noir, it was an XP theme, not Vista theme. It just takes the regular xp interface and makes it black instead of blue/green or steel/olive
