hi guys. i live in shitty cleveland, OH. i sick of this place, so im gonna go join a homie out west and travel for a while. do you guys have any advice? ive never even been out west, but a bunch of my friends moved to Oregon and ive heard great things about it ( i see it got quite a few mentions in the hippest place to live thread) so im gonna go check it out. i leave in a couple days. taking a three day bus trip to seattle, and working my way down. any advice? in terms of cheap ways to eat/sleep/get around/ how do i keep me and my stuff dry? good resources for finding lodging, people, hip spots, ect? i got about a grand stacked up, so that should last me, any pointers would be appreciated.

well depends completely where you're at. I did the same thing this summer except I started at the Bay area and worked my way up north to Portland. Many people talk highly of Portland, it's a pretty cool spot but you have to watch yourself there. If I was you I'd work my way down to Eugene, Oregon. It's a chill spot and the place is a pretty streetfolk friendly spot. I know you can get food, shower, do laundry and all that there at the Saint Paul Eugene Service Station; you just have to fill out a little paper work when you go in there the 1st time and they'll give you a number. That's all there is to it. Just ask around there on where the spot is and people will know.

My favorite spot was Northern California though. Once you get down to NorCal just get on Hwy 101 and that's where you wanna be. It'll take you to a bunch of chill towns and will continue all the way down to the Bay (San Fransisco area). All kinds of beaches to sleep or just chill at along 101 with lotta other streetfolk. Of course you gotta go down to Humboldt County. There, you are in Redwood land, where many people live in the trees. I was there and stayed in a Brush house for 2 months out there. Arcata's home of the best energy I've ever felt in 1 place besides maybe Boston area or a dead show. Eureka's farther south on 101 and is home to a lot of tweekers. Humboldt takes care of their streetfolk I can tell you that. Just get there and ask around, most of the locals there have plenty to tell you so i'll just leave it 2 them. Of course, lotta herb in Humboldt **purple haze, trainwreck I & II, etc**. me and another streetcat gathered 1/2 oz in about 20 mins in Arcata just asking around for some spare buds to hand out to travelers. This time a year especially you'll get wet in Humboldt County though, especially Arcata given you'll be in a temperate rainforest there. Oh yea, right by the greyhound station in Arcata is where you can find all the help you'll need there.

Hope some of this mess helps ya bro. Happy & safe trips oh yea....PACK LIGHT!!!!!!!!!!! I promise move quick and stay quiet

Definately gotta say Eugene over Portland if you're gonna be crashing some place without a roof. Portland can have a hostile environment towards the "homeless", whether its coming from the Police (notoriously anti-street person) or from other people crashing on the streets. Eugene is pretty mellow, and the people that are wanderers there tend to be more laid back. There's also more secluded areas and forest on the outskirts of Eugene.

    Hey,
I found myself on here earlier today because I'm doin the same thing. Jeebus. I leave Buffalo NY before the end of the week. I dunno if your hitchhiking or what but I'm going through Oregon before heading south to Cali. Though I'm in no rush to get anywhere. Long as Im on the west coast by mid Nov. I'm gonna be on the road for the next 6 months on and off so I would love any pointers you might have. E-mail em to me or post em here.

I know where you're going with this, but that's not what I said. I did say that Eugene has a safer environment if you're gonna be homeless
