Tower of Power although not jazz, and not to my liking has an amazingly tight and funky brass section.The Brecker Bros. are like out of this world. and although not funky, you can never go wrong with count basie on vinyl. I find that it sets an icredibly cool mood.
skerik's synopated taint septet. look no further. sickest jazz of the last decade. skerik plays the sax in claypools fancy band, also in a few other projects most notably critters buggin and garage a trois, which are experimental jazz, and funky jazz respectively. if you do a myspace music search for "skerik", the syncopated taint will come up.... also, The Motet is pretty funky. but they play lots of different stlyes as well, incorporating afrobeat, electronica, jazz, and rock as well as funk. the taint is world class funky jazz at its finest, one of my favorite bands. If you can, check out the album "husky". It is a masterpiece. And if you REALLY want to explore the experimental jazz world, you should try the Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, or the Dead Kenny G's (just caught the DKG's a few nights ago and it was one of the best shows ive ever seen)
