Ok well i have a bit of a bone to pick with people who call themselves hippies. I don't have a problem with the lifestyle, drugs, or anything else that goes along with it.However, It really gets on my nerves when "hippies" stereotype themselves, but then tell me how their all against racism, stereotypes, and the likes. They live up to the stereotype, and then contradict themselves and end up being a hypocrite. Just sharing my thoughts. Im not against hippies or anything just would like to discuss this. Thanks guys.
You're quite mature and intelligent for a 13 year old. Good for you! (I'm not being sarcastic, by the way.)
And you're right. Too many kids go on about how they're hippies, and how everyone else are 'fake hippies'. It seems like the only people they can talk to about it are people they've never met via the internet and this forum. Never restrict yourself to a stereotype.
Hi Luke....its been awhile! And yes, thank you Leave Me Be for stating this. It's really amazing (and disturbing) to see how much it means to people to belong to a certain category. Why cant we all just be ourselves? As for the adolescent need to fit in, you'll get older and realize how lame that is. ( I wanted to fit in when i was a teen, but you get wiser). Nothing is better than being yourself, being comfortable with yourself, knowing yourself, and to hell what everyone else thinks.
I agree...I have never called myself a hippie personally. But the def. of a real hippie is more of a way of thinking and a lifestyle rather than listening to the Dead and doing shrooms. You can be a millionare businessman and be a hippie.
What I realized about this site (which I think is ironic and sad) is that there is a lot of judgemental people, who are ready to attack one another at any chance they get. And this attitude completely contridicts what a "hippie" truly is.
'Hippie' isn't an attitude. It's a term that the media coined - as they do with everything - so they could call a certain type of people something.
The word hippie is it's self a stereotype in most peoples minds unfortunately. I feel like that is one of the things we hippies need to watch out for. I call myself a hippie...but I have short hair, eat meat, hate granola, rarely listen to the Grateful Dead and only marginally like herbal tea. Though it's true, it's a little bit like saying I'm black but don't like chicken or watermelon. Even denying the stereotype is affirming it. I think we are ok as long as WE know what the word means. But when someone who just doesn't fit in with mainstream culture because they have differing beliefs and values doesn't know what to call him or herself, then we are in trouble.
believe me or not, i thought just the same when i started reading your post, Leave Me Be :0 really the only true thing is that clever mature ppl never would never seriously say "i'm a hippy" or "i'm rasta" with the exceptions of course...
These posts are both very true. Unfortunately they also get a bit repetitive, cause every now and then there's one stating these things again. It's even sadder that there's a need for that, 'cause people apparantly won't get it. All that quick judging gets really on my nerves and I immediatly can't take the persons who make posts about fake hippies and preaching hate against squares, soldiers and subcultures that aren't 'hippie' but call themselves true serious.
but there's nothing wrong with jokingly making fun of the subculture the rest of the world puts you into. viva la freeeks
no, you dont look like... i was talking about the original poster and your smart remark, which reflects my first thoughts on the post
I agree! My friends used to call me a hippie all of the time in a joking manner, and I would joke along with them. I did it for laughs, not to start preaching about how I am a hippie and the rest of the world are "fake hippies" and such. What is a "fake hippie," anyway? Nobody can really decide who is fake and who is not. The word "hippie" seems to have different definitions to different people. I think it's really sad when I see 20 + year-olds discussing this. Immaturity in the teen years is one thing, but I think it's time for some people to grow up and care about bigger issues.
