Some research worth following if you have a family member with this condition. Fish Oil May Fight Alzheimer's Disease Dietary Supplements Helped Protect Brains of Elderly Mice By Miranda Hitti There is new evidence that fish oil could help ward off Alzheimer's disease.fish oil could help ward off Alzheimer's disease. Currently, there is no cure for Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of mental decline in older adults. The latest findings -- which are based on a study of lab mice -- don't change that. But they enhance fish oil's reputation as a "brain food" that may help protect the brain from the ravages of Alzheimer's disease. Researchers worldwide are hot on the trail of an Alzheimer's cure. They're studying everything from diet to mental activity, while working on new Alzheimer's drugs. The need has never been greater. About 4.5 million people in the U.S. have Alzheimer's disease, says the Alzheimer's Association. By the year 2050, that number may rise to 11-16 million people, the association estimates. Fish Findings Alzheimer's disease is a progressive condition. Gradually, it damages areas of the brain involved in memory, intelligence, language, judgment, and behavior. Alzheimer's becomes more common with age, striking one in 10 people over age 65 and nearly half of those over 85. But Alzheimer's disease is not an inevitable part of aging. It's less common in some populations that eat a lot of fish, researchers have noticed. Those studies don't prove that fish oil prevents Alzheimer's disease. But they have sparked curiosity about one of the fish oils called DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). DHA is one of the omega-3 fatty acids found in abundance in cold-water fish such as salmon, mackerel, herring, and sardines... WebMD
" Long suspected of lowering the risk of heart disease and diabetes, the Mediterranean diet consists of large amounts of fruits, vegetables, beans, grains, and nuts. Red meats are eaten only rarely and poultry, eggs, and dairy products are eaten in moderation. Olive oil and fatty fish are the main sources of fat in the diet. Just as with their previous study, Scarmeas and colleagues found that people who most closely followed the Mediterranean model had the lowest Alzheimer's risk. People who most closely adhered to the diet had an Alzheimer's risk that was 40 percent to 65 percent lower than people who were least likely to follow the diet, Scarmeas tells WebMD... " CBS NEWS
I heard fish oil is easily replaceble by vegetal oils though, the high demand for fish oils is not doing much good to our fishpopulation!
Can't fish farms be used to raise the fish that are rich in DHA? That can cut down on the numbers needed to be taken from oceans, lakes etc. Fish Farming
Turmeric is also thought to help protect against Alzheimer's disease. It is common in Indian meals. In the US this is most commonly found in mustard.
Fish oil contains a compound called DHA, which is short for a really long word I don't know how to spell, LOL. DHA and another compound called PS (phosphatidylserine) combine to help build brain tissue! I've seen in a magazine a photo of a "before and after" PET scan of a woman with early Alzheimers. In three weeks, the improvement was simply amazing. In the health food store where I work, I've shown this picture to a couple of doctors who were also amazed by the results. They ended up buying several extra large bottles of some PS and some fish oil. That was enough to convince me. Kelley Eidem PS. Hello everyone...this is my first post.
While some vegetable oils are nutritionally useful and some are not, none as far as I am aware contain any long chain omega 3’s. No it would not .You ca buy an algae supplement although it is questionable if is as god as consuming oily fish or seafood. Farmed fish generally are not fed algae therefore are not a good source of long chain omega 3”s. I have also read somewhere that fish oil supplements are not a particularly good bio-available source of long chain omega 3’s. Could you elaborate? Can you refer to a scientific study rather than a newspaper article.
