I went to a semi-annual rummage sale in our community and found a Singer sewing machine for $4. I had the man plug it up and made sure it worked and then I latched onto it for dear life. It is an older model. It is a 337 and according to some web research it was made in 1963-65. They still have parts available for it though so it's all good. I was curious if anyone knows a good site for learning how to use a sewing machine. I have found that I can buy the instruction manual for $15 but I'd rather not. Any info is much appreciated! Yay for junk sales!!!
Trial and error. I bought a sewing machine for my daughter at a yard sale about a week ago. It had the instruction book, but all the pages were stuck together, so we couldn't read it. So, we are just playing with it. Those old machines are usually pretty sturdy, so it sounds like you got a really good deal.
I found a singer 401 model at a yard sale complete with manual and cabinet. Its a beautiful machine, two tone brown. The date on it says 1957 and it has a ton of different stitch functions. I have yet to try it out- its a little intimidating I have a good source for singer parts online just FYI they are the cheapest I have found and they ship fast. Have fun with your new machine!

I'd love to be sewing on a 401, that is the best machine I have ever sewed on. Now I own a Brother ULT2003D and a new Singer. Neither compare.
I guess I'm just scared of her a little. I think I will have the 401 cleaned and serviced just to be sure I don't break anything the first time I touch it! lol. I'm sure once I start it will be my favorite machine
