I've been actively composting as much as I can for the better part of 15 years now, so I'm rather familiar with the rate of what composts, and taking care of my composter over all. Although, a new thing that my husband and I have added to our composter is peanut shells. Husband adores eating peanuts, and had added a bag's worth of peanut shells at a time to our composter. The problem is, is that it's been a year now and they still haven't really decomposed. I thought that the shells were (despite being wood) light and airy enough to decompose rather well. Any suggestions to help speed things along? Also, this may sound like a dumb question, but having peanut shells in our compost, is that going to affect our garden in any way in case we encounter someone with a peanut allergy? How does that sort of thing work?
no idea about the allergy thing but i dont worry about the random hard things that dont get broken down by my compost. it wont hurt the garden so i just dig it all in.
