I cant believe that Bonzo didnt even come in until the fourth page! oh well, my favorites would be john bonham and keith moon, they are crazy!
I thought this was a thread of which LIVE drummer we have ever seen, not counting DVDS too. Otherwise Bohnam is my favorite by far far far,
Best drummer I've seen is probably Antonio Sanchez of the Pat Metheny Group. Haven't actually seen him live though, only on the video I bought from the Speaking of Now tour. I watch it again and again on my computer - his drum solos are amazing. And he doesn't just do jazz stuff but really fast intense rock drumming and breakbeats - as they performed Roots of Coincidence on the video as well, which is a very rock influenced track. Even though you can still hear plenty of jazz elements in it the over all sound and feel is a rock sound. However his jazz solo in The Gathering Sky is unbelievable. It wasn't just him though, the whole band are amazing musicians. Best drummer I've actually seen on a stage in front of me is probably Gilson Lavis from Jools Holland's band - his "Rhythm and Blues Orchestra" as he calls it. He can keep you entertained for hours with one of his solos, whilste the rest of the band goes off stage.
Last week this "Strike" percussion group came to our school, and they were the best I've ever heard playing live. They had a aluminium "cube" about 3m by 3m and they had drums positioned in weird places around the cube so they had to jump and move and stretch to get to the drums, so that it looked really cool as well as sounding really cool. And they also played some Pacific Island drums and had some audience participation, so that was cool too!
One of the very best! Saw him with band in Tilburg (NL) He used to work with McLaughlin and Jan Hammer and Miles Davis and such... He's amazing... Also saw what's his name, Zappa's drummer, Terry Bozzio with a solo-act but Bill was better!
best drummer i've seen with my eyes was probably the drummer from Alice Cooper, i appologize cause i ddont know his name. he was damn good.. he did this kick ass drum solo that totaly rocked. so ya!
For just being a fun guy and not really for the technical side of it Ringo Starr, but for a really good drummer who blows my mind of how they ever got a song to come together, Mich Mitchels from the Jimi Hendrix Experience....This guy is crazy...just constant fills!
IN NO SPECIFIC ORDER: Levon Helm -The Band (great voice too) Elvin Jones- Jazz Legend (played with Charlie Parker, et. al.) Mickey Hart/Bill Kreutzeman- Grateful Dead (interplay between the two is fantastic. Listen to Rhythm Devil's on Dead Set Billy Martin- Medeski, Martin, & Wood (amazing ethnic percussionist too. Check his work on John Scofield's A Go-Go Jim Capaldi- Traffic (simplistic but every groove is perfect for the song) Danny Carey- Tool (Can't ask for a more technical player)(PS check out his recommended books on the Tool website. Some great stuff there) Jack DeJohnette- Miles Davis drummer- two words...BITCHES BREW Art Blakey- Jazz Legend (one of the most charismatic drummers of the 20th century) Bill Bruford- King Crimson, Yes (God of Progressive Rock drumming) Joseph "Zigaboo" Modeliste- The Meters/Funky Meters (What a groove!)
KEITH MOON definatly. best drummer. no one even compares to him. my second goes to John bonham...Bonzo was also fucking great
A question: Does anyone remember that Willy_Wonka said the best drummer you've SEEN LIVE Just wondering, cuz I've seen some folks posting about the best drummer who weren't even born when the cat died.:sunglasse Not that it matters all that much.
RICHARD CHRISTY of DEATH! He now works on the Howard Stern show for some reason. I saw him on the 1998 'perserverence' tour, and (IMO) so much better that the Rush guy, EVEN Ginger Baker. I'm sure most of you don't know about him, since your all hippies . or Donald Tardy of Obituary.
woah man i saw them on the 98 perserverance tour too! You know that DVD? LIVE IN LA, well man i was fucking there and i met Christy....LONG LIVE STERN!
He could be... but touring with Iced Earth, and having a job based mostly in NY is kind of hard to keep up with I would think.
i agree!!!! R-I-N-G-O and ringo was his name -o! hehehehhhehhehehhhe roly.xxx p.s.I KNO i haven't seen him live....but.....hey ho
