According to the Hindu Mythology, Lord Shiva is seen with dreadlocks (known as the jataa) piled up as a knot on his head. Details say that the uncontrollable speed of Ganga or the Ganges is checked by his dreadlocks.

It is said that Shiva takes the weight of the mighty Ganges in his locks and imprisons her. In times of need she is released through the locks of his hair, which prevents the river's force from destroying earth, and the waters bring purification to the planet.Hence the jataa or the dreadlocks of Shiva (also known as the 'Mahayogi') illustrates the symbol strength.

    ^ That's awesome.

But I find it strange that you have to convince her it's in your religion/tradition.
    Wouldn't she know?

I personally love some of the dreadlocks on the Sadhus. i have a book with a bunch of different dread pics from around the world, and there's quite a few sadhus in it, and they're neat!

i'm also kinda with slang too, the sadhus are a pretty big deal as far as i can tell^^

Many of the sadhus and yogis grow dreadlocks as an expression of faith.

There are also Sri Lankan Hindu-Buddhist priestesses who leave society and grow dreadlocks, I'm reading a book about them.

Have you tried posting this in the Hindu forum? They might have better feedback than we can give.

Don't be afraid of doing a little googling of your own. :1eye:

My dad says he will talk to my mother for me :D DANCING BANANAS!!!

Actually i found out today (from my pa) that the reason my mum doesnt want me to hav dreads is shes worried ill ruin my hair... The tradition was something she could fall back on as she thought if i knew the real reason i wouldve been very angry and very annoyed and not stopped going on about it (which is true) and this way i got to show my mature side (research over pestering) and so

    I WILL GET DREADS!!!! :D

Now i just need to find out how to remove them so i can convince her i dnt need to shave it all off... Ahhhh so happy. :)

    Ooh. Awesome lol

Dreads can be combed out at any age :p (with a lot of conditioner and a lot of patience)
