Lol, I didn't know that, but I actually wrote a paper on him last semester for English class. It discussed the social and cultual identity in Woody Guthrie songs, lol. It was pretty awesome, I think.
Yep, I love Woody Guthrie. I played 'Ain't Got No Home' on the college radio here in El Paso during a tribute to him not to long ago.
100% yes. I make a bigger difference as a functioning member of society who stands up for what is right, then I would if I lived in some commune somewhere. Nobody is going to all of the sudden start listening to hippies. But they will listen to those of us who are incognito.
Hey Woodstock...ever heard the song Woodie Guthrie by Leftover Salmon. You ought to check it out. It might have been written about you. And if you like Guthrie you would love Jim Page. Try google!
you can drop out of society & change society simultaniosly the simple act of dropping out renders society obsolete, unnesacary..but at the same time your free to work towards changing the minds of those still stuck, & your in no way a slave to societies ways as for your music, do you needan indistry to get your message heard? or can you sing your heart out & just let those willing to listen benifit from your hearts songs? theres no need for confusion & conflict between your dreams & the life u feel you must live, they can peacefully coexist, isnt ballancing your own life, finding a way to make allaspects of yourself coexist peacefully the first step in inspiring others to coexist peacefully? theres no need for sacrifices but it will be alottawork love u woodstock
As a musician myself I know how lame the mainstream music biz is. Even back in the early 90s some major labels would take chances on less commercial ventures. Not anymore. That's why indie/d.i.y.s. routes are the way to go if you care about art. Once the industry found out a lot of money could be made back in the 70s, the death knell was rung in terms of quality for easily/easier accesible artists. Why take a chance when a new best of will easily make this quarters quota type thinking. It's a shame that quality isn't easily available. I think anyone who says differently is just being a pseudo elitist.
Let me say quickly that woodstock. I think it is really good to see someone in the 13-18(ish) age range who feels this way and is trying to make some possitive influences to others. I know that it can be difficult, expecially for those around our age to really feel certain with who you are as a person and who you think that you might want to be. Everyone finds their own 'callings' and meanings in life, for most, it takes a little longer but my point being, you should be who YOU want to be. You dont have to live up to societies rigid expectations. Having your own values is SO important because if YOU dont know who you are then who does, right? Everyone here will find or has found their own paths and their own ways to co-exist with themselves and the others around them. For me, it took a long while to find the true me as a person and now, I say that you should never underestimate the power of your own mind. It has no limits and once you see that, there is really no stopping you. In regards to your music, I'd perhaps take a leaf from John Butlers book. He is pretty much proof that indipendant label arists can make it in the music industry with his band The John Butler Trio. Although his direction worked for him however, it probably wont work for everyone. Of course, think small for now and reach people from your local district, I know you may not feel your making the big difference you so eagerly wish to achieve but you will be making a difference. It may only be one or two people, but still, you will see it is worth it. (I hope that made sence) Peace.
Im a lot more selfish in my views... screw society and where its going, Im thinking basically only about myself and how I have to get out of this fucking city. It´s exelent to try and change what you think is incorrect.. but its mostly just energy burning (if you actually try) and you dont really get anywhere. Thats life it really sucks... my father almost died of a heart attack yesterday... I sometimes think that I have reached the lowest level of satisfaction in life but it always seems to prove im wrong. At least its friday and im gonna drink like an Irish !!!!
