I love those breaded chicken things with either a hot buffalo style sauce or more of a shanghai style sweet sauce. Really I like the breading and the sauce, so I was wondering if anyone has a suggestion for a meat substitute that would be good to make a mock version of this. Aka, does anyone know what meat substitute is best to be fried with breading? Or a suggestion for a good pre-made product that I could just pour the sauce over or dip in the sauce? Your help is appreciated! Thanks!
Ok, maybe not breaded... whatever. Does anyone have a suggestion for something yummy for one of these sauces to go with?
Quorn is pretty good, you can get them with some kind of breading or just the cutlets and make them up yourself. Think morningstar might do something along the lines of buffalo wings. Another idea is to use tofu; drain/press it, cut into small triangles, dip into egg & cornstarch, then fry it. Comes out nice and crispy, good for a stir fry.
Yeah quorn products taste like chicken and they are really good! They have breaded patties. I don't know if you wanna make your own though. I really don't like the cutlets in that brand but thats just me
I really liked the Morningstar buffalo nuggets before I went gluten-free. They were hot & spicy, and went well with all sorts of dipping sauces Just a note though - if I remember right, they've got egg in them so if you're vegan you might want to double-check the package. love, mom
I'm not vegan yet. Both morning star and quorn Chik'n pieces have egg and milk in them from what the package said. So I am going to try out the tofu too just so when I go vegan, possibly at the end of the year, I won't have to test out as much.
oK here's the proper vegan recipe for the fried breaded tofu ... http://veganyumyum.com/2007/04/crispy-sweet-and-sour-tofu/
You're welcome It is as good as it looks, and all the other recipes I've tried have been too. So it's one of my fave blogs.
Try the quorn, and the boca spicy chicken patties are pretty good also. I sliced one up and dipped it into a spicy sesame sauce and it was pretty good.
I don't trust "mainstream" fake meats like Boca and Morningstar. They put a lot of crap in there. If you want to eat them, go to your local health food store and find something like Dr. Praegers.
