My boyfriend's mom is allergic to insence so its possible. Maybe try a natural brand if you're not already.. some cheap incense isn't natural and has weird stuff in it I think. Holy Smokes and Trikola and Nag Champa in the blue box are natural

I know an elderly lady who has this problem.

For most though, its most likely the kind of incence your burning.

All my incence comes from India or the Orient. Never seen any domestic stuff that was worth my time. Stay away from dipped incence that has been locally produced. Most have inferior ingrediants, and the punks (the stick) are too green.

What is the name of the product you've been using?

And one other thing, any smoke is going to be an irritant to your body. Don't overdo it. I light a stick and then leave for a while. Rich incense like durbars and champas are pretty heavy with perfume. Hard to stay in the same room with them, but what a wonderful after aroma to come home to!

I have a problem with incense too. I haven't tried to narrow down exactly what bothers me since *I* don't burn it myself, but every time I visit my sister I have a reaction much like how I react to cigarette smoke & cat-hair; the itchy, burning "my skin is crawling" sensation... and if I'm in it long enough I'll start developing a rash across any & all bare skin. I know she only burns Nag Champa, so I'm guessing in my case it's not a cheap-incense "thing."

I figure it has more to do with my smoke allergy (I have a similar but not as bad reaction with fireplaces & bonfires) than with any ingredients that might be in the incense, but I've got SO many allergies... it really could be anything.
    love,
    mom

It is something that could worsen over time, but of course it could also be the quantity of incense you were burning. In any event, as someone else pointed out, any burnt substance is going to be an irritant to some degree. Any time you can smell burning incense, you are also inhaling the products of combustion that come with it. Maybe use it in more moderation, or try switching brands. Good luck!
