To all the musicians out there. Do you play only when you feel the urge, or do you force yourself sometimes just to keep your self oiled? I play only when the instruement calls to me, thus sometimes I don't play for days. How does everbody else feel about practicing? I am an advanced begginer on guitar, and the same with percussion. I love playing. I play mostly by ear also. I like to fool around on the fret board and create simple melodies and chords too. I took a nuber of years of guitar practice growing up, and I hated to practice then. If I could change one thing it would be to have taken it more seriously as a child.

It depends what I'm playing. I play in a gigging band, so I feel like I have to keep myself fresh with our material so when we go out I don't make an ass of myself.

But I do most of my writing only when the instrument is calling. I guess it's having two different ways of practicing really...

I don't play in a band. I don't write music. I can pick up where I left off most of the time.

People don't usually judge too harshly if you aren't totally on. Don't think you are an ass because of other peoples expectations. It's really amazing that you actually play in a gigging band. Not every musician does. It really is something special.

I play all the time. Music is in my soul and I have to express it. Even if that is just moving my hands or humming a tune. If I don't let it out I get stiff and I have to let my soul express what it is feeling.

I practice at least two days a week. I've been playing
guitar for 3 years, and I am self taught as well. I
pretty much only play classical now, I finally got myself
a classical guitar about a year ago, and I play by ear
all that I've learned. Though when it comes to some stuff,
like Flamenco, and some Bach, if you dont play fairly
often, your fingers will not be able to keep with your
    mind.

I usually play when it 'calls to me', but sometimes when I haven't played for a while I'll pick it up. I'm always better when I'm motivated though :).

It's not really other people's opinions I'm too concerned with. When we play originals or blues jams I'm not worried that kind of stuff is just what I play and my own style my own pace, that never goes away.

But we also play a lot of Floyd and Doors and stuff, and I feel like I'd be doing a dis-service to the tunes if I didn't work to keep up and make it sound as good as it should.

There are some songs that if you don't practice/focus you just can't play anymore: spanish caravan, echoes, etc...

Thanks for the compliments on the playing out... It just kind of happened we used to only play at parties and for friends then we got a couple gigs, it's been pretty cool.

Well it depends. Typically I play the bassoon because I have to. (not saying that I don't love it!), but seeing as I have a private lesson class most of my practicing is the pieces my teacher tells me to.

I do play it when I get the urge as well, though. My other instruments (aside from piano, as I have a class for that too.) I play when I get the urge.

I play every chance I get, and usually do a serious practise session alone a couple times a week - depending on what Im working on. I also play in a performing group, and that can change what one practises, and how often.

I almost always feel like playing as soon as I wake up. One of my favorite things is to pick up a guitar for an hour or two after getting up for the day.

I agree with the last Samson sentence, I like playing after getting up too, but my problem is that I live in block of flats and play the sax. Well, when I wake up early, I must stay back for my neighbours :)) But sometimes it´s hard, I don´t know if it´s a enthusiasm of beginner, but I stop playing when I have others responsibilities or bloody uloncus.

I play when its calls me of corse but sometimes i have to force myself. Im in a band and at band practice im not always in the mood. Sometimes the days when i force myself are my longest practice times, it just all comes out.

I practice a bare minimum of 2 hours a day. There are times when I have to force myself and those usually turn out to be the best practice sessions for me.

There are many days that I will practice/play for as much as 6 hours.

I spend good money to take lessons from a professional, highly trained classical player with a masters degree in guitar performance from a huge university. I tell him to push me and he does. It gets very tedious at times, but my playing level has gone up dramatically.

When I play it's almost always because I felt the urge to do so, and I almost always feel the urge to play. So, basically yeah, I'm almost always playing.
