    Hey all,

Im an ex flautist (A good 5 years ago) and now have been playing guitar for near 2 years now and its great- Im well and trully addicted, but I would like to add another instrument to my repetoir. Perhaps one that would open up more avenues for a band situation. I've almost definitely nailed it down to some form of percussion.
I was just curious; compared to the flute or guitar, how easy is it to pick up? Alot of the music theory I learnt in flute (I was around 10,11, 12 years old) I have remembered and apply to playing guitar. Is knowing your way around a drumkit transferable to other forms of percussion, say for example a djembe or a set of congas? And as there are no notes, how important is music theory, would it be worthwile getting lessons or is there tonnes of info on the net, like perhaps an equivalent to ultimate-guitar.com
Alternatively, I would love to learn the piano, but I imagine that would definately require me to get lessons, and Im a poor student.

Aaaalso, when buying a kit (secondhand), what should I look and look out for. Are cheap brands okay?

    Many thanks in advance,
    Speddy

I started out on clarinet and along the way have picked up guitar, piano, flute. violin, french horn and some others including drums. When you know music on one instrument the next one is much easier and you can often teach yourself. University music libraries are great free sources for books on how to play various instruments. The important thing is to play the kind of music you like and not get stuck on technique and method books or teachers for that matter. Every instrument has its particular muscle skills that need to be developed. Make sure you never play if you're getting pain signals which tell you you're pushing too hard. Otherwise go for it. Learning multiple instruments really enhances your appreciation and enjoyment of music.

I always say get lessons for a while, no matter what you take up. It's easier to learn from somebody that already knows. The trick is finding somebody that is skilled and a good teacher at the same time.

I learned the absolute basics of drums from my dad in one day. Once you learn the basic beats, 2/4, 3/4 and 4/4 timing, your pretty much good to go. Drumming is the probably the easiest instrument to imitate by listening.

I have learned a number of instruments over the past 8 years. Started with guitar, then went to bass, then drums, then keyboard, now back to guitar, Out of all of them keyboard/piano is the most powerful emotionally so I'd say go with that if you want to enhance your soul :)

Well Ive got a keyboard... but some of the Sharp keys don't work :( But Ive managed to teach myself some chords, I figure as soon as I start working again Ill get a book on it. Also my band and I need a place to jam seeing as our drummers house isn't large enough so I think were gonna deck out my shed, which means buying a drum kit =D So that will be fantastic. How long until I could be considered a competent drummer, given that I practice a fair bit and am slightly coordinated

Honestly not long. Once you get down the rythm and the different tempo's you can just change it up as you go along, it's fairly the simplest instrument of all (except the tamborine) lol The shed sounds killer bro, I say go for it :)
