I've had my dreadlocks for about a year and 9 months and, although I'm generally really happy with them, over the last few months a lot of the dreadlocks on the back of my head have come out completely. There's a fairly large (about 7x4 inches) patch of loose hair and it's being a real bitch to re-dreadlock. The rest of my dreads are fairly stuck now so I don't know why these ones are being so difficult. I've got thin dreads though and my hair is very blonde, so the loose hair shows up a lot. I used wax when I first got dreadlocks but about 6 months ago I finally managed to get rid of the last bits (it stayed stuck in there for as long as it possibly could). Do you guys have any ideas about why this has happened and how I can re-dreadlock and stop it happening again? I think because my hair's so fine that dreadlocking is pretty hard without wax - but I definitely don't want to put anything like that on it ever again. Please help!
Yeah, I bleach my hair almost-white every few months. It obviously dries the hair up but seems like it helps the dreads to lock up, if anything. Do you think it could be bad though? Don't I need to have something to crochet the loose hair into other than other loose hair?
stop bleaching. i've heard many horror stories about people who bleach their hair and the dreads dry out so much they break off. so the dread broke off all they way to your scalp? if there is a "stub" of a lock left i would crochet each one one to each stub. otherwise, if you have enough loose hairs, you should be able to crochet the broken off dread onto the loose hair..that is if you saved them? how many have fallen off?
Sorry, I think I explained it badly! The hair hasn't fallen out, it's just come unknotted. My hair is still all there but all of the dreadlocks have come loose - so it's just like normal, flat hair rather than knotted dreadlocks. Sorry to be confusing Although, I think you're right - bleaching definitely snaps the hair off if you're not really careful so I try not to do it too much.
oh ok, no prob. if you have the basis of a loose dreadlock, pull the loose hairs through the dread (back and forth) until it feels nice and tight again. after that just leave it be. if it's just loose hairs and no basic dread shape, i'd just let it dread on its own or backcomb it. do you have a pic? my dreads are very hard too, but i have some loose hairs which don't bother me. they have actually started to tangle up.
One side of my head wasnt dreading quite as well because I only slept on that side. I've since trained myself to become a more violent sleeper
I think that sleeping might be part of it, but I'm scared of sleeping on my face just in case I stop breathing. Anything for my dreads! <3
