i know there was a book as well. so,is it about living your dreams? cause even if that was the case,it doesnt change the fact that the idiot failed, not only did he fail he failed in record time.

i just cant get over the fact that he starved to death in 4 months and hes made out to be this inspirational hero.even if the stoty is about the events leading up to his failure,it doesnt change the fact that he failed, and in record time...

i think it's supposed to be about turning your back on society. like he was a martyr to his cause of trying to slough of his meaningly life. but so far as i can tell he was a twit.

people. who can figure them? apparently he was a bit of a prick in real life, and totally self-absorbed. it makes sense that sean penn loves him and identifies with him so well.

Personally, I'm stoked to see the movie...if I get a chance to somewhere along the line.

I've read the book and honestly, I loved it. I would love to just drop everything and do what he did...yeah he failed but look at it this way, at least it isn't going to be a Hollywood ending....*shrugs*

Have the first few posters in this thread read the book that the movie is based on? I doubt it. I read the book a number of years ago and re-read it a few times, it's an incredible story. Was he self-absorbed? I guess in a way, since he believed his ideas about life to be correct and wasn't willing to compromise them. To me, this isn't self-absorbtion, this is being principled and courageous. He had his own set of ideas which were well documented in Krakauer's book and are intensely interesting and provocotive, and he had the courage to act on them. He knew completely what he was getting into when he set out for Alaska, he knew he mighe die. Did he fail? He failed at surviving, sure, but that's only because he knew that he must risk his life in order to stay true to what he believed. He isn't a hero and you aren't supposed to idolize him. Although he helped people along the way this wasn't his primary goal, he was no Gandhi or saint. He is, however, a fascinating example of how committed someone can become to their own virtues and how difficult it can be to not comprimise them.

    my $.02

being committed to being a dumbass still means you're a dumbass, just a committed one.

no i aint read the book, if ya look i stated that i knew there was a book, however i never even implied that i had read the book.

that bein said,i have heard a shit load of interviews and shit on the story since the hype about the movie has begun.

i guess im just old and jaded but following your convictions to death is overrated in my book..
in fact its just stupid in the context of this story.
im not sayin it aint a good read.im just sayin the dood was a fuckin idiot no matter what lesson you may get out of the story.
i cant help but sit here and laugh thinking of it all..

well, if he was ACTUALLY committed to the life, he woulda learned how to live it, instead of again just expecting it to all work out.

    I've read the book.

The book fails to mention one thing...

The fact that Alex probably just had one lsd trip too many.

Yeah, that's pretty much it. There is nothing too noble about the guy.

He just read so much Jack London and did so many drugs that he just lost it.

Hell, I would have probably gone on that type of journey if I could afford it at first, and if I had something to back myself up on.

You must remember, that even though Alex burnt all of his money... he still had rich parents and a college education. He could travel around all he wanted, and then just slide back into society in one swift step.

    It was easy for him.

thats what gripes my ass about kids today.. they get somethin in there heads, then read a few books an they think they can do it.

if nothing else this story illustrates the fact that it aint as easy as that.

any idiot can follow his dreams blindly to his death.A smart man prepares to live his dream beforehand.
