Ok, I'm definately done with condoms, I hate them. I have bene thinking about going on the pill for some time now...but I'm nervous about the side effects, blood clots, and that kind of thing. What did all you women go through when you started taking the pill? And what are my other alternatives...I don't wanna get depo-provera, or the patch... Ugghh...why can't pulling out be more reliable.
i started taking the pill about 6mo ago.... i've had absolutely no problems, i think that nowadays the bad side effects are very minimal compared to the high dosage pills of the yesteryear, haha. really though, i've had no problems, in fact since i've started taking them my skin has really cleared up, so it's like a bonus. the only complaint i could think of is the having to remember to take it every day around the same time, but you get used to it after awhile. peace!
I am one of those women who are unusually sensitive to hormones. Before going on the pill, I had severe cramps, but PMS only surfaced if I tried to do something very tedious at the wrong time (like try to do small detailed work making wire jewelry!) The first pill I tried turned me into a psycho-PMS bitch (like far worse than average PMS) for 29 days a month. The next pill I tried was far better -- I only spent 1 week curled up in a ball crying every month. The next pill was better, but still bad... I'm not sure exactly how many I went thru, but the major side effect I dealt with was the emotional roller coaster -- I have never been clinically depressed, but I think at times certain pills made me feel what it's like. I just kept trying lower & lower dosages of hormones, because the pill has reduced the cramping, & now I can schedule it (I have actually had to miss a midterm exam because of cramps, not to mention other important deadlines & whatnot in classes). I've been on my current pill for I think 6 months & it's going well. As for serious health risks like blood clots, talk to your gyno. I know they are a much more significant risk if you smoke cigarettes, but I don't know much more about those risks.
There's a higher risk for the more serious side effects if you smoke or if you're over 35 (and it's drastically higher if you smoke *and* are over 35). The only noticeable side effect I had when I went on the pill was that my breasts started to get sore. But that got better when I started wearing bras less often.
i agree with chickengirl with the over 35 thing but as for side effects for me,there were none.i swear.........i was taking ortho-trycyclen.made my skin much more bright and fresh, less break-outs,the only down side is the price....like 149$ for a month cycle.if you have insurence,go for it.what could you loose?!the doctor can put you on the pills right for you.the doctors ask a series of questions regarding your family history etc......i say give it a try, good luck!
i've been taking tri-cyclen on and off for several years now, and although it does clear up my skin, it also makes my breasts a little larger and really, really sore. when i run or jump, i actually feel little jolts of pain in my breasts as they bounce. i've also noticed that they make me kind of dry. not a big problem, all it takes is a little lube. but by far the worst side effect is that the pills have taken a serious chunk out of my sex drive, and make it nearly impossible to have an orgasm. when it used to take a matter of seconds to get off, it now takes upwards of 20 minutes of direct stimulation with my vibe, if i'm lucky enough to get there at all. i've only been on the pill 2 months, though. i'm hoping this gets better as my body gets accustomed to the hormones. but in the last 2 months, i've had 5 orgasms or less. that's pretty pitiful. i guess the side effects are part of what makes the pill such effective birth control...who'd want to have sex when they're bloated, moody, breasts too sore to touch, dry, anorgasmic and never in the mood anyway? what's the point? maybe i should consider switching to something else. oh, and to the girl who started the thread: if birth control worked all the time, i wouldn't be here. it happens all the time. don't trust one sole method of birth control - you always need backup. if you don't like condoms, try something else. my gyno recommended a diaphragm. not safe on its own (i owe my life to a faulty diaphragm!) but apparantly it's great paired with the pill.
If you need lube during sex, you can always use one that contains spermicide as a secondary measure coupled with the pill too... you just use this little plunger thing to insert it (not unlike those for treating yeast infections)
I take yasmine ( low hormone) and I love them!Skin is clear ,,,period is 3 days,,hardle NO cramps,,very light period,,,and I can skip my period if I want. I don't all the time but every 2-3 monthes I will skip ,,which some people say is not natural but my doctor had a GREAT way of explaining what it does and doesn't do and I trust him ,,been with him over 7 years! Sex drive is a FAR less! Boobs are fuller!Sex Drive gets better after 3-4 monthes so don't fear!
