as we all know, or if you dont, Billy Nershi has left SCI and that is the reason for the hiatus. Now the question that my family has been asking is "who will be the new guitar player?" A lot of people say it will be keller but i dont think so because he has such a successful solo career among other reasons. Personaly after hearing the friday the 13th show from the beacon i believe it will be Eric Krasno of Soulive. If you listen to that show you will know why. I just wanted to see what other people thought
Why do you think it will be Krasno? I'm betting this'll have a nice cool off period, which they can certainly use.
I was at the 13th show at the beacon - and yes Kranso did rip it up (I think kang ripped it harder) but it was an amazing show (my last incident) and the shakin the tree encour was beatiful. But to the question at hand - I do not believe Krasno will fill in for Nershi - at all. Nershi is a superb songwriter and though krasno has chops he's not the kind of player that would fill Billys spot. But regardless of how qualified Krasno is - there will not be a fill in for Billy. The boy's have stated that they won't go on (at least under the name sci) without Billy. They are going to take their little break, Billys gonna get some fresh air - do what he needs to do as a person and a musucain. Then he will have to decide if he wants to return to SCI. At first I was very critical of Billy - but now I can really see that he has to do what he has to do. The relix iddue with SCI on the cover was very revealing about the story behind the breakup. The band members all have different opinions on the hiatus though. I think on opposite spectrums are travis and mosely. Travis is the easy going hippie who is saying that he wants to play with SCI again in some way but if Billy decides not to return - they'll work something out - figure out dsome new configuration. Mosely is saying that he wants all of the menbers in SCI includong Billy back in the band and playing together - I can tell he doesn't agree with Billy's dicison. I think Kang was more in the middle - saying that he sees why Billy left (the pressures of a record label, the making music not just for the sake of making music, wanting more freedom. ect...) but he believes that though these are tough aspects- its what you have to deal with and work through. I don't really rember much about what kyle said- I don't think he said much. Kyle's always been my favorite, and I think the billy leaving definatly upset him. I have no idea what is in store for SCI's future - I think it can really go alot of ways depending on Nershi's experiences outside the band. I've enjoyed and loved SCI while they were around, but I'll uderstand whatever happens. However, I do not think having SCI without Billy will be a good idea.
personaly i think that they will go on with or with out billy. i say this because ive talked to a lot of people, including my parents and sister, who have met different members of the band and they all got the same response from them when they asked about the break up. it was something to the effect of "dont use the word breakup use the word pause."
"pause" is a PR tactic while they decide WHAT to do. I pigeon-holed Billy in December about his plans and he said then: stay home, enjoy my family, but HTHS and Emmitt Nershi are announcing dates.
I agree with your Keller statement however, they are very good when he joins in! Will SCI play again sure. Gov't Mule went on without Woody, WSP went on without Micky! Who they get however will be important Trey comes to mind, but I believe he would cause trouble sharing The spot light.
play together (Kang, Travis, Jason, Keith, Kyle) yeah, with reservations on Mosley. As String Cheese? probably not (I'm thinking Billy has some ownership of the name) as Jack (who did MC duties) said at the last Red Rocks Show: "this isn't good bye."
Leo Kottke should apply for the job. Damn wouldnt that be awesome. Just while Billy takes a little breather ofcourse. And its not the String Cheese Incident without Billy so maybe "the Ice Water Incident", "Mud Lark Incident", or "Burnt Lips Incident", and definately get Chris Berry into the mix while your at it. And just do a ten show tour. just to see how it feels. They could definately do that. I'd be down.
Bump! Khang says that he only wants to play electronica (or whatever he wants to call it), nnow. Billy is not interested in that, and neither am I.
Kang plays the technolivetronica pretty well, but Travis and Jason are the shit when it comes to that. That said I'm itching for a Panegea show.
