this is going to sound dumb, but its been bothering me. about a month ago i had an infection where one of my wisdom teeth got taken out, so i was on penicillin for a couple weeks and my stomach got quite bloated. i chalked it up to the antibiotic killing my good stomach bacteria and messing with my digestion. but i havent been on it for 2 weeks, and my stomach is still really big. i look almost pregnant. now im fairly sure it cant be gained weight, my diet hasnt changed and all i eat are fruits, veggies, a little oatmeal and a fair bit of legumes. in fact, beans make up a good portion of my diet since with my schedule at school i have to go long stretches without eating and hate being hungry. plus my family kinda bugs me about getting enough protein, so thats another reason i eat so much of them....but no more than i did before my infection. so, what should i do? im thinking about greatly reducing and amount of legumes and fruit in my diet, and making it mostly vegetable based. is this a good idea or not? and does anyone has any other suggestions?
As long as you're satisfying all your basic nutritional needs, no problem. As for the stomach swelling, could be a number of causes. If you have any concerns over it, see a doctor. x
i would see a doctor if i had health insurance. it doesnt become effective until january. i mean im sure its nothing serious, it just bugs me.
have you tried putting probiotics back in with plain yogurt, kombucha tea, or kefir? you have to replace what got killed off. Also, sufficient water helps considerably to keep that fiber moving through. why are you not on insurance until January? and a doc visit can be around $150. At 16, it is your parents RESPONSIBILITY to get this checked out.
well im vegan, so yogurt is out, and i have no idea what that other stuff is. wont the bacteria come back on their own?? i mean, they got there somehow naturally, right? and im not on my families insurance because i was living with my dad until about 2 months ago, and hes a cheap bastard and had no insurance for me. my mom cant put me on the family plan until october and they wont cover me until january....its stupid, but we have no choice. my mom would take me in a second if i was in pain or had a serious issue, but i dont think this is serious and its not uncomfortable physically in the least.
you killed off the bacteria in unnatural numbers. Even refrigerated probiotics from a HFS will help. GT's Kombucha is $3 a bottle and that is two servings (High Country, my local maker, says the same size is four servings. Whatever, it's usually two with me and my sweetie kills a bottle at a time) kombucha is a fermented tea. Google-fu it.
okay, thanks. i doubt i can find it at the local bi-lo and this place has no health food stores but i'll try.
I agree with drumminmama on this one. You need to replace the good bacteria in your system and drink more water. Kombucha will help, or you can get Silk Live, a soy yogurt with live cultures. Silk Live is available in many supermarkets if there is no HFS or other natural food store in your area.
fairie, if you can let me know where you are (and a PM is fine if you don't want it on the board) I can find SOMETHING for you. and there is always mail order.
well i've been drinking more water like you suggested, and thats helped a lot. normally i drank at best half a cup a day, but i've upped it to about 2 or 3 now. i've also been eating lighter foods throughout the day instead of heavier less frequent meals and cut back on sugar, so i think those things were a big part what was causing me problems because my stomach looks more normal now. thank for your advice and your help, i doubt the rents would mail order me anything but i'll scour the local stores for everything you mentioned. as far as where i live, its about an hour south of charlotte, nc in a little rinky dink town so i think to find any specialty health foods i'd have to go to charlotte.
