Anyone here a fan of Frank Zappa? I just finished downloading the 14gig discography and I'm not quite sure where to look first. I was interested because Steve Vai, my favorite solo guitarist was in Zappa's band for a while. Anyone here have any suggestions of some songs I should be listening to? It's kind of hard to sift through a library of hundreds and hundreds of songs by the same person to pick out his best works
Joe's Garage is sweet. Also look for Via's Flexible" (sp?) album. Zappa's stuff is so diverse that when you do start going through the thousands of albums that you will find some really excellent gems
Billy the Mountain and Disco Boy are pretty cool songs. His album that has the songs don’t eat the yellow snow and Dynamo Hum on it is one of his best. Cheers!
joes garage is definitely a solid album. i dont know how thorough the discography is but see if you have his live album at the filmore. its a concept album about led zeppelin defiling groupies with a mudshark. i highly suggest it.
those are two seperate albums. the album Apostrophe began with the song Don't Eat the Yellow Snow while Dinah-Moe-Hum was the second to last song on Over-Nite Sensation. these two albums are now sold together on one disc. ironically apostrophe is the first album on the disc despite it was the album released just after over-nite sensation. on the two-album disc there is no indicator when listening to it that it has changed to a different album. these two albums were my introduction to frank zappa, but i've got to say my two favorites are hot rats and zoot allures, though i haven't heard nearly as much of his stuff as i'd like. i'll say that you really can't go wrong though, the guy was a musical genius and everything he did was pretty much spectacular. you'll also want to check out captain beefheart, who did a lot of stuff with zappa (such as on the song Willie the Pimp, the only song on Hot Rats with lyrics) for the record the first night i ever smoked weed i went home and put hot rats on the headphones and fucking rocked that shit out.... and frank zappa was, amazingly, pretty anti-drugs, including pot, and if i'm not mistaken if any of his band members were found to be drug users they would be kicked out as he felt they offered false creativity. Oh well, his loss if he didnt want to smoke! Still, hes one of the best musicians ever, in my opinion.
So many to choose from. Check out these Albums for sure: Filmore East 1971 Over-Nite Sensation Apostrophe Baby Snakes Hot Rats Waka Jawaka Roxy And Elsewhere One Size Fits All Bongo Fury Sheik Yerbouti I could go on and on
You are correct sir. If you like Zappa you should check out his book. It's called The Real Frank Zappa Book.
out through the night and the whisperin breezes to the place where they keep the imaginary diseases. stinkfoot kicks ass
Thanks for the good replys. To cover a couple comments, the discography has absolutely every studio recorded album as well as b-sides and pretty much every live concert he performed in. I'm finding quite a bit of his stuff interesting just because I'm such a huge Vai fan. It's neat to see where much of Vais playing style comes from. Oh yeah, Zappas Stairway to Heaven cover on "The Best Band You Never Heard" is fucking great. The solo almost has a reggae beat behind it. Straight up sexy sounding.
Once you get started on Zappa you can't stop. I have that discography, as well as some unreleased albums. Zappa is AMAZING. Music is the best.
Hello! Just wondering if anyone has ever read the transcripts from Frank Zappa’s court trial for his right of freedom of speech. Cheers!
