I'm so glad we have a monument for them...just based off the fact that I'm marrying a firefighter and he is the most heroic person I know. I never really thought about how much firefighters do for us before I started dating one.

Around here the volunteer firefighters (and it's sad and even mean seeming to say but true and everone here knows it) start fires to put them off. But in the larger cities, yeah firefighters are awesome...that's not the say firefighters anywhere that are decent and save people's lives shouldn't be apprieciatted for what they do but there is that whole subculture here......

the volunteer fireman here are so-so,
not much happens in my little neck of the world so consequently, we have volunteer fireman either too old or too out of shape...not to mention outdated equipment...when an acre of my fathers land burned in may they were just barely able to put it out...due to faulty equipment, lack of thinking, and overall inefficientsy(sp)...

Most volunteer departments tend to be a little...ehh. Kevin, however, is paid. They have a regular fire department running 24 hour shifts. He's on-call, but he still takes a lot of shifts when needed.

The men that actually put effort into it are heroes. The rest-can just burn with whatever fire they don't put out.
