I've always loved nature & natural looking things, & wanted to incorporate nature somehow in my knitting or crocheting. In past years, I hadn't had much luck, until I was recently inspired by the idea of using drift wood sticks as crochet hooks. So, this past sunday, hubby & I took a walk along one of the small beaches of Lake Ontario in Port Credit, & picked up a handful of sticks 10" and shorter.

After a bit of sanding, carving, painting, and varnishing yesterday, I ended up with these:

I'll be posting them on etsy eventually, once the varnish has had a bit more time to dry.

yep... the varnish is still a bit sticky (it takes 24 hours to set) but once that happens, they'll be going up on etsy... I'll post links here when that happens.

    just one of them...

The thing is that they're not as smooth as store-bought crochet hooks, which takes a few loops to get used to working, and in turn your crocheting ends up being a bit looser than usual, and it also takes a few stitches to get used to the shape of the hook, but overall it crochets really well :D

I love them. I love natural wood too, and it's great you're re-using something natural.

You're a genius. I LOVE those. I grew up right on the beach (Lake Erie) and I've always had a thing about driftwood. And I have a thing about crocheting too, so. :D

Yeah. Those are pretty excellent. :D

    oh my!!
    they are beautiful!!!!!!!!!!

i dont know if you've thought of it, but if you do find it a little tricky using them cos they are not as smooth, rub all over your hook with a candle it will let the yarn glide off ;)

    good idea, bunjies :D

I've done my best to sand them, so they're fairly smooth. But, because they're not a consistand size throughout like regular crochet hooks, it takes a while to get used to how to hold them. That's pretty much the biggest thing to overcome.
