ok, well, i have been learning guitar for a bit, still learning, however i have come to a crossroad.

I plan on investing in a fair classical guitar and learn more. I adore the sound of the chords and can only imagine the beautiful music i can make with it.

However while at a guitar store, i came across a mandolin, i have heard the music from it, and i find it too is gorgeous, and i have an interest in it.

i have more experience with the guitar, but i am tempted to learn the mandolin

    so what do yall suggest

is there a good type of mandolin for beginners

and should i try persuing the mandolin or stick with the guitar?

    thanks

stick with guitar learning the music theory and method, especially recommend classical guitar. mandolin is beautiful but once youve mastered guitar mandolin isnt that special. its beautiful yes and can be used in amazing ways but its only useful with a rhythm instrument behind it. pursue both just pursue guitar more intently

Mandolins are pretty nice, but I would go
with the classical guitar if I were you.
Once you get into that level of playing,
    not many instruments come close.
The amount of personal beautiful noise
that comes from playing classical on
nylon is by far the most fulfilling (imo)
:) I actually gave my mandolin away
to a good friend after using it for
    about 3 years.
    Good luck either way.

Just go with whatever you want more. If you think the mandolin will make beautiful music, and that you'll enjoy it, buy the mandolin.

I would say stick with the guitar.

I just started to take some clasical lessons about 6 weeks ago and think that it's the best thing I have ever done on any level. The lessons are taking me to the next level of playing too, I've improved dramatically because I'm forced to really take it serious and practice alot.

Once I bought for my guitar-player boyfriend a mandolin as a present for his birthday. However, the event was on the next day so I spent whole evening playing on mandolin and I fell in love with it's sound and finally that mandolin still stays with me :p

Why not to play on both of them?

to tell you the truth, mandolin is alot easier to play. if you want to learn scales and theory fast, then i would go with the mando.
classical guitar is great, if you learn to play it properly, and you can really refine your pro chops on this instrument.
but keep in mind, all roads lead to the same place, and thats a flattop, or better yet, archtop, guitar. finger pickin is alright, but when you really want to go after some music, nothin beats usin a pic on a quality guitar.
i say try to learn all 3.
the classical guitar should definatley be your 3rd purchase though, its much better to get a beater guitar first, then the mando if ya love it, then a nice classial to last you some years, then go for a quality highend guitar, then a nicer mando, then another guitar . . ..

I'de say get pretty decent at the guitar, then learn the mandolin. Never restrict yourself to one intstrument! I'm guessing the mandolin will come more natrualy after learning advanced guitar. Twas like that for me when i got a banjoe.

    Have fun!
