well, i was vegan when i was younger, because i cared a lot about animal rights. i still do, but i've decided that boycotting is not very effective. i started eating meat again maybe 6 years ago. but i never went back to dairy and eggs, because those are so gross and unnatural. like, other animals eat meat from other animals, but only humans harvest milk. we're supposed to drink our mom's milk as a baby and then when we can eat solid food, ween off it. like all mammals. and cows don't produce milk for human consumption. they're tortured with artificial hormones and milking machines. plus, dairy is gross as hell. it's greasy and fatty and constipating. and eggs are pretty gross too. just look at them. eww. but anyway, lately, i've been thinking about not eating meat anymore either. i already don't eat much of it. i actually prefer soy meats, and i like tofu and beans and nuts more than meat. i don't know why i want to stop eating meat, but it just seems so gross. i only eat really lean meats, and no pork or seafood. but beef products seem to disgust me these days. i want to be vegan again, but i remember how hard it is to sustain that lifestyle. you can't eat anything from restaurants! and i'm poor, so i can't afford all those special vegan foods. and i'm lazy, so i don't want to cook for myself all the time. plus i'm pretty transient, so i don't even really have a place to store the foods. i was thinking i might improve my health a lot if i don't eat meat. i have IBS and other digestive problems and need some kind of change. what about freeganism? i think that is how i would do it really. because if food is going to go to waste and i am hungry, i can't see not eating it.
A vegan diet does not have to be expensive. In fact it can be cheaper if you don't buy all the processed "vegan" foods and just buy fresh ingredients. A vegan diet does not have to be one composed of all those marketed vegan foods. You can eat a diet of fresh ingredients.
http://www.vegsandiego.com/veg/8/Veganism_on_a_Budget.htm http://altveg.blogspot.com/ See it really doesn't have to be expensive or complicated. Oh and check out these podcasts; so fun and inspiring ... http://veganfreakradio.com/index.php?id=100 [a bit on this show about freegans] http://veganfreakradio.com/index.php?id=82 [Gary Francione interview, very thought provoking] http://veganfreakradio.com/index.php?id=104 [vegan health info] http://veganfreakradio.com/index.php?id=105 [follow up to that show]
That's so true. Since I went vegan my libido has sky-rocketed. Other reasons to go vegan: Lower risk of cancer, heart disease and other diseases Lower cholesterol Conserve resources Save money Save lives, stand against cruelty and torture Vegan food tastes amazing
I agree that milk is really unnatural (and gross).. eggs are kinda weird too. I'm not vegan though, I'll eat stuff with milk or eggs in it and I eat cheese. But anyways... you say the cows for milk are tortured with hormones and milking machines... well animals for meat are tortured just the same or far more and pumped with artificial hormones too and chemicals and whatnot, so you're still ingesting all that stuff by eating meat. I think meat is gross. Thats why I first started to go vegetarian, and all the other reasons made me do it. You're like eating a dead body, I think its weird. But besides that, factory farms are horrible for the environment, 79% of the grains used to force-feed the animals could feed the world - the WORLD. Those animals go through horrible things and I think it has negative energy and its not fair they don't get to roam free. I know I sound like a hippie but for serious. There are a lot of reasons to stop eating meat.. unless you're getting all your meat from farms that you knew where it came from, but there are still complications with that too and its up to if thats right too. So yeah, you basically answered the question yourself! =)
because whether or not you see it, boycotting the meat industry does work.. supply and demand, and you hit em where it hurts, the wallet. Assholes like them don't deserve money.
If you care about the environment, you might consider this: -intensive cattle farming pollutes our water systems with nitrates, phosphates, harmful virus and bacteria like e. coli and salmonella, synthetic hormones and antibiotics. Hormones in our fresh water systems are causing major effects on freshwater fish (masculinizing the female and feminizing the male) effecting their reproduction. Antibiotics in our water is allowing bacteria to mutate resulting in supergerms that can resist treatment. Not only that, when mammals are exposed to the hormones, it causes all sorts of cancers, mostly of the reproductive organs. -Dioxin is a deadly chemical. Mammals are exhibiting high levels of dioxin in their bodies. The main sources of this are meat and dairy products. The nature of dioxin allows it to store and accumulate in your body, and can easily cross placental barriers as well as release itself into breast milk. So a pregnant woman severely puts her child at risk. Did I mention dioxin is a teratogen, mutagen, and carcinogen? -Oh yeah, and if you dont' manage to contaminate yourself with synthetic hormones from our groundwater systems, there's always eating meat and dairy to contaminate you. I could go on and on. Whatever your cause is, animal rights, the environment, your own health, there's a reason to boycott meat and dairy.
For IBS, fiber is for the health of the colon (bowel). So where is the fiber. All plant foods, like fruit, have plenty of fiber unless it is taken out like with refined grains (wheat and rice). Animal foods have no fiber and meat eating animals have a different colon than ours. People think that they need to worry about protein but the latest research shows that all the excess protein that people eat, is causing them to die of cardiovascular disease. See the site Weight Loss for more on this. Also the best food is fruit and this is why people have a sweet tooth. Meat is expensive. Beans, brown rice (like brown basmati rice)(a whole grain) and potatoes are very cheap. Look for sales on fruit. I just bought some organic braeburn apples at $1.59 a pound. Meat is a rich people's food. The fiber in whole wheat is irritatng to the colon but the fiber in fruit is more soothing to the colon with the pectins and gums (types of fiber) in fruits. If you fast for a month and break the fast with meat, it could kill you. Even vegetables are not good for breaking the fast since the colon has been on vacation. But fruit is great for breaking the fast and is good for a colon that has been on vacation. Grapes are very healthy but now they are very expensive, but there are plenty of other fruits.
Yay! Go freegan, it is the ultimate boycott! As soon as the weather gets nice enough to go out rummaging round M+S I shall do the same.
We cannot convince you to go vegan or even vegetarian, no matter how much we wish we could. It has to come from you. What are YOUR reasons? we can help highlight benefits. I think that for any life change it has to benefit you, so getting some awesome, easy recipes is a must. Maybe working backward to the diet would work for you (and those still at home vegans in training) know what is in your body care: soap, shampoo, conditioner, vitamins, lotions, scents, etc; what's on your body: leather, wool, silk; and the easier food items: what hidden critter is there? what are your options? Eat whole food you cook and know what is there. What else are you balancing, while eating food made by others? I reluctantly started getting a bread with dairy because it does not have HFCS. Yes, I should make my own bread, but I work 6 days a week, and laundry (off site) has to be done, too! I can't make enough that will last for two weeks, which is the pattern I'd need.
