I would like anyone who got an email supposedly from admin@hipforums.com (a non-existent email addy), with the title "*DETECTED* Online User Violation" on or around Sept 1st. to let me know. If you opened it, it had a short message that said: Dear user skip, It has come to our attention that your Hipforums User Profile ( x ) records are out of date. For further details see the attached document. Thank you for using Hipforums! The Hipforums Support Team +++ Attachment: No Virus (Clean) +++ Hipforums Antivirus - www.hipforums.com The attached document is a VIRUS, do not open it! If there is anyone who got this message, please let me know. Don't send it to me, just send me the header if you can (the text part only). This may be the US gov't attempt to put spyware on your computer. The IP# traces back to Reston, Virginia where the CIA has spy operations. If anyone can, I'd like to have the attachment in this file identified and analyzed. Is there anyone here that can do that? Thanks!
Aaaaaahhhhhh! That's really scary, Skip. No e-mails found in my inbox yet, though I'll def keep an eye out.
Perhaps it was only sent to me, obviously to compromise my computers. I'm currently doing indepth scans of my computers for such viruses. This was obviously a hand tailored message, not SPAM. I was worried they had our users email addys, but if no one else got one, then I guess the server is still secure. Nevertheless, I know there have been recent hacking attempts on our server. If you ever get an unusual email, supposedly from us, please report it to me. We NEVER send such emails, and in fact, once you've registered you won't get anymore emails from us, unless you contact us first, or you signup for email updates of your threads. However, they CAN scan the site for MSN IM addresses, which are the SAME as email addys. I think that is how many of our members get spam. Newbies make the mistake of posting their emails in threads or posting up their MSN IM addy, then they write us and complain about spam from our site. It's they who are soliciting spam by posting their email addys on public pages. BE SMART!
Wise words there chief! I've learned the hard way... fortunately I've insulated myself with changed ISPs and email addys in the decade or so it took me to learn some internet basics.
Yes, I figured out which virus it is (a nasty trojan), so it wasn't custom tailored at all. I just was on the address list of someone else who got the trojan. That's what it does, scan your address list and send it self to everyone. It will open a backdoor to your computer, so it's very dangerous. Fortunately it never got that far on my computer. I'm just a little too savvy for that...
Yea, I didn't get one either, thank god, I probablly would have opened it, haha. Damn government! *shakes first angridly*
