Electric Wizard are a doom band from Dorset, England which formed in 1993. Among the more popular bands from their genre, they have a distinct yet still traditional doom metal sound with a stoner and sludge references at times. http://www.myspace.com/electricwizarddorsetdoom Anyway know this band? opinions? Likes? DIslikes? I love it
I like them, but they're not my favourite. The combination of the vocals and too much fuzzy and slow compositions just doesn't always fall good with me. I rather listen to some albums of Bongzilla or Sleep nowadays. More stoner, slightly less doom. I dig Dopethrone though.
I don't really like their sound. They do nothing for me, stoned or not. Something I've never understood is the difference between sludge en stoner rock/metal, can anyone explain?
I also find sludge a bit vague, but I've found out the bands that are generally described as sludge or having sludge influences are not my fav. I've heard it being described as doom with punk/hardcore influences, which makes a lot of sense of why these bands aren't among my favs.
Hm, I kinda like things like Minsk and Cult of Luna, the more soundscape-ish sludge bands, but the hardcore vocals remain a turnoff indeed. Sorry for hijacking the thread, carry on.
I carry on offtopic . Some kinds of vocals in a different kind of music takes some time to get used to. I normally never am fond of hardcore or gruntvocals in doom and stoner bands, but with Electric Wizard and especially Bongzilla I find it kind of fits the music after awhile. Ontopic: I saw Electric Wizard live one time, but I carry only one brief memory of it, haha. What about that.. Saw them at the Roadburn festival, the greatest fest for this kind of music. :spliff:
Electric Wizard are amongst my favorites. I don't like them as much as Sleep, but a lot of bands fall under that category. Sludge definitely has punk/hardcore influences. I'd rather call it sludge than create another "core" genre. (Doomcore, Stonercore, ect) Any of you The Mighty Nimbus fans?
A favorite of mine. I literally worship Jus. It sucks having to wait for the new album. Stoner rock/metal relies more on groove, very bluesy. Sludge is definitely more dissonant, hardcore/crust influenced for sure.
I would jizz myself if they where to go on a tour with EYEHATEGOD and Crowbar...Dopethrone is a kick ass album and We Hate You is a fucking GREAT smoking song.
Heavy, distorted, slow paced and repetive oh yea, how could I forget, VERY VERY LOUD. The way to describe there music is like taking a clear picture, put it in Paint Shop, then blur, skew it, warp the fuck out of it until you don't know what you just shot. There was something there, but you can't remember what it was. That's what it's like listening to EW...you hear noise, feedback, distortion on top of the song structure, which they do everything in their power to muck up. Some people get, other don't, but I will gaurantee you, you've not listened to anything like this before.
It took me a long time to start to appreciate them more. I still consider them overrated (particularly the album Dopethrone), but once I heard We Live, I was able to appreciate Dopethrone more. My favorite Electric Wizard song is Eko Eko Azarak; it's simply brilliant. Dopethrone is the only EW I have, although I do plan on buying another.
The new album is done, and it's called Witchcult Today. Heard the American release was November 20. I can't fucking wait. 8 songs of misanthropic, drug-filled, occult-ridden doom. One song is a 20 minute organ-led song about black magic rituals. So fucking bad ass.
I like the way you describe it here. Makes me wonder if I haven't judged too soon. I might give them a second chance. Talking about misanthropic, drug-filled doom, you should try out Esoteric from the UK. Not stoner, but extremely heavy psychedelic funeral doom with the most intense deathgrunts you're likely ever to hear. It's nice!
New album leaked, shhh. I LOVE it. As far as production goes, it's definitely their softest (especially compared to such heavy hard-hitting albums as Come My Fanatics and Dopethrone), but it sounds pretty similar to the recording of the first Black Sabbath album. Music still kicks ass. Black Magic Rituals and Perversions only turned out 11 minutes long though, and it's instrumental with sound clips. I'm loving the album anyway.
