i'm just wondering if anyone has any advice or information for a small family (mama, papa, baby) who wants to become self sufficient AND nomadic.

( we would eventually like to leave the U.S. but, that's a whole other thread;))

    thanksya, family

    loveyou

I am interested in seeing this thread myself. I have wanted to be nomadic since I was 14. It never fully goes away, I just get so caught up in life that it's hard to remember it's possible. Seeing it every year at the gathering almost becomes painful.

how did you guys pull off the veggie oil on the road?

i've done research (and currently have an '89 diesel jetta) but, i still don't quite get how it would work out without having to have a constant homestead. are you using recycled veggie oil from resturaunts and such?
any suggestions for finding a cheap bus/van?

we didn't pull off the veggie oil on the road but we've met some folks that have & they usually use resturaunt oil. our last road bus was a gas engine but gas was only $1.50 a gallon max when we were on the road....we coulda never afforded to go anywhere at current gas prices, concidering that busses usually get very bad gas milage (under 10 mpg :0 )

finding cheap busses is usually easy, just look in the yellow pages for someplace that sells &/or leases busses...if you can find one that the company leased out, those are good busses to get cuz the companies are usually picky about doing regular maintainance...busses that have been traded in by the school districts are often more likely to have more wear & tear.

wow...interesting suggestion list we never needed A or D of your list & B, well we had a standard no drugs or alcohol policy on our bus. If I were making a list of handy road items I'd have:
    A.wipes
    B.trade/vending items
C.emergency repair money (bus tires run about $150 each)
    D.a decent tool kit
    E.a Chilton
    F.some filled water jugs

Sounds good. But European probably are not that lucky in the leasing buses or cars, I heard from some French that is more possible buy a bus and than sell it like a lease it. But when you´re going on the long time road, I guess it´s OK.

In the US, it is easy to buy used school busses for not much money...it would be very expensive to lease a bus here.

I'm not sure any of us have started to lead what others would consider an ordinary life...we still live in a bus, well busses now, 5 of them and while I do have an ordinary job, it isn't full-time & we still sell our tie-dyes & jewelry like we did when we were on the road. Music & Art is way more of a focus for us than making money, and the money that we do make gets invested into things that will help us be self-substaining (raised bed gardens to help us grow food in the harsh Texas environment, solar panels & the like)

my suggestion is since u have a family of 3, get a vechile that is comfty enough for you'all, one of the adults do day labor when money is needed and rest of the time keep it simple...find family or a commune to visit while out and about to take a lil break from the road...camp out where you are comfty rest of the time..it works for me!:) good luck..
