wondering how other animal lovers feel about this

i'm looking for a job and i'm going to the humane society today because it would make me happy if i could work with animals there. on the application, it asks how i would feel working with animals that will be euthanised.

in my personal opinion, i hate the idea, but i would still like to work there so i can put in some time finding homes for the animals before they have to get euthanised (which i would do through volunteer work anyways, if im not getting paid). how would you feel about working in an environment where you have to care for the animals for a period of time until it's 'time-up' and they get put down because they can't find a home?

Unfortunately the euthanisation of unwanted animals is a reality in our society of irresponsible pet owners. Most shelters don't have the money or facilities to become a no kill shelter. So it is an unfortunate reality that needs dedicated people to deal with these animals. I personally don't think I could deal with it, but I am glad there are those who can.

The first time I wrote about a local shelter (town run in El Reno, Okla) I came in late of a Thursday.
moments before I walked in, six animals lost their lives, two had horrid injuries and were immediately scheduled for euthanasia.
The other four were longer term residents, about a month and a half. One kitten was spared.
(I wound up with the cat.)
the smell was...overwhelming, physically and psychically.
Now, a nearby no kill came through regularly and took the animals they thought they could find homes for.
I'm assuming the ones that died were close to unadoptable or suffering greatly.

It was an incredibly sad feeling. no anger (which surprised me) just a thick, stifling sadness and feeling of impotence.

I know mine is not a very popular opinion...but...it makes me sick to think that innocent...healthy animals will be put to sleep.....they havent done ANYTHING to deserve it....
but we have PEOPLE sitting on DEATH ROW who have committed HORRIBLE CRIMES...who are SUPOSSED to be put down...but they are still alive ?????
    Thats Just Not FAir !!!!!!

i value your opinion. thank you for posting this. i feel the same way. it makes me sick. however, as much as i hate the system that exists, i would like to give it a shot (working there) because i believe that i have more drive to help find the animals homes than the average person. it makes me feel helpless when i think of how many animals are euthanised for no reason other than because people don't want them. it is a sick feeling.

I will always struggle with the euthanasia part of any humane society, yet I know it would only be worse if I and many others were not around to help the animals in finding good homes. I truly wish you all the best in this endeavor if you decide to proceed!

I volunteer at out local humane society and here is a quote that is one of my mantras which keep me going and helps to lessen the despair of the situation...

I looked at all the caged animals in the shelter, the cast-offs of human society.
I saw in their eyes love and hope, fear and dread, sadness and betrayal.
    And I was angry.
"God," I said, "this is terrible! Why don't you do something?"
God was silent for a moment and then spoke softly and said,
    "I have, I created you."
