Based on the "who whould you smoke with" thread, a lot of people here like him. I do too. I've read be here now and am currently working on the only dance there is.
I'm a fan of Ram Dass as well... only book i have read so far of his is Be Here Now though.. a must read for anyone
I have to agree. Even if you are not into taking psychedelics, the book is still beautiful. Be Here Now is a great concept, and it is good for people having trouble coping with this diseased and dishonest society. I can see it helping people who are not immediatley comfortable with being looked at as psychotic and delusional for their belief in God. Ram Dass definitley has helped many people come to terms with God not belonging to a secular religion, but that we are all One and also has helped people accept each other for their differances. But I find that if we dwell on the concept for too long, and dont take further steps (which he actually touches on breifly at the end of the book) then we are remaining inactive, which goes against the Gita, the very book by which Ram Dass lives his own life by. -
Its funny you should say that because it did just that for me and I actually recommened the book to someone else for the same reason. It does do soo much more than just that though Hands down one of the best books I have ever read
heehee yea met him a couple times last time think i spent like almost 2 weeks hangin with him unfortunately may never get the chance again, been talking to a good freind of his & aparently rams not planning on leaving maui ever again or at least anytime soon hes opened some sorta spiritual center there & plans on just staying there, i dont think hes even doing any speaking tours anymore, i thoink when i hung out with him in cali was the last time he did anything before retiring to maui aparently he had gotten some sort of infection shotly after & was pretty sick, but hes recovered, just i think travelings too much for him these days

What is his spiritual center all about? And by that I mean can anyone go there or is it more of a private thing? And to stella, if stella is in fact your name, Ram Dass is Ram Dass. Ive never really been able to answer such a question any other way, especially with someone Ive never met. Althoug hI suppose thats of no help to you so Im not quite sure why I answered in the first place
baba 4ram dass was born richard alpert he later became proffessor alpert of harvard, timothy leary having his office down the hall offered ram some acid & from then on ram & lesary & others did alot of heavy experimentig with lsd at some point ram wondered about the experience more then the drug & specificaly if the experience wasatainable without drugs he traveled to india where he wss introduced to the maheraji (spelling?) after awhile staying with the maheraji studying meditation, he starts telling him about the drugs & what experiecnced maheraji asked to try some & ram wss very hesitent csause he was an old frail man ram pulls out a handfull of lsd pills, very strong ones, ram had tripped alot on high doses & 1 pill was plenty strong enough for him, but the maheraji took the entire handful ram sat there watching him all night...and absolutly nothiong happened except maheraji claim,ed to have a slight headache when your alrady high as can be, how can you go higher? anyways maheraji gave ram the name baba ram dass, & he returned to ameria & wrote a book called be here now which is a powerful book thatds changed milion s of lives several years ago he suffered a stroke while working on another book on aging ^ since has written still here theres also a movie u can download called firce grace hes a gentle very high spiritual man who had always had the gift of being able to take the most complex questions life offers & giving a one line answer a child would understand, since his stroke though hes become more the master of odd analogies that have deep meaning not sure if thats biographicaly acurate entirely but basicly thatds who ram dass is i met him first on the great peace march while fasting & in typical ram styple when i met him it was cause he was offering me french fries but at the gatherig in cali i got to just hang out with him pretty much everyday,id spend time with him in the morninmgs when we could just hang out as brothers & talk & shoot the shit & whatever before the crowds gathered & the questions started by the time the crowds were gathering around him you couldnt hear him anyways unless he was speaking directly to you\ google ram dass if u wanna know more hes also on my myspace freindslist
im way too sleep deprived to remember the name of the place but the guy who told me about it who was going to go has been there off & on since ram moved there, & did invite me i believe it is open & if u remind me i can check on it for you, but i believe the guy i need to ask is still there, hes also on my m,yspace & hss been helping take care of ram when he wassuffering from the infection if i remember correctly
