My little cousin was asking what 'philosophy' is last week and it was pretty hard to explain the concept of what it is... I gave examples of questions philosophy seeks to answer, one of which was 'What is Courage?'. Little did I know, he decided he wanted to know what courage was. I couldn't actually answer it! So later on I thought about it, and heres my thoughts 1)Courage is the will to overcome the fear that others would be defeated by, 2)The ability to self sacrifice for that which is good, 3)To choose inherent, unnamed, inexplicable and maybe undiscovered morals over the nurtured 'wants' of a mans. 4)It is when a man actually would do what he should do, 5)And what he could do has no limits 6)Courage is choosing between saving the life of the person who deeply loves you or the person you are deeply in love with. 7)Courage is standing up to and oppressor when all others are seated 8)Courage is to tell the truth and believe its importance outweighs the costs 9)Courage is respecting all others as equals and standing up for others as one would for themselves. Just thought i'd share!
Jet Li's Hero is superb commentary on the nature of courage. I highly reccomend showing it to your cousin.
In the third century BC, the hordes that eventually populated most of central Europe and became known as "Celts" swarmed over the Alps into what is now the Po valley in Italy, in numbers so great they displaced the entire Etruscan nation. Their collective life philosophy was "To the courageous, all things belong". That just so completely rocks...
