Im the same, i find it generally hard to just indulge in chit chat with people i dont know or care to know, even with friends sometimes, depending on the situation.

I'm very quiet in situations when i'm with unfamiliar people, yet if i'm in front of a crowd or with my friends or family, i'm loud as hell.

This is officially the lamest most tamest confession yet, seriously it isn't even much of a confession, it's more of a psychological observation about yourself.

Most people are more comfortable and social around there friends... it's normal.

My husband and I have two VERY best friends here, Cory and Jason. Cory is extremely shy/quiet (the three of them have been friends for a long long time, when I "joined the group", it took Cory almost 6 months before he'd say A SINGLE WORD to me)... the weird thing is, when he's around friends, he's fucking hilarious (and obnoxious)... but it depends on how many friends. Like, if he's feeling "extra-shy" one day and he's over, he'll talk to me as soon as my husband leaves the room, or talk to my husband as soon as I leave the room, etc. Or if Jason is over, he rarely puts anything into the conversation, but I'll go outside to sit and he'll come out and yap with me, etc. Now THAT is weird.

I’m like that with work and social life. If some one tries to talk to me when I am working they pretty much only get a one word conversation from me (yes or no) and if I happen to be in a chatty mood – I will give them 4 words (I’m pretty busy now).

But when I am walking around town on a day off and someone say’s hello – I will follow them around for blocks chatting away.

    Cheers and happy weekend!

That's exactly what I thought. And it isn't even an odd observation - this is the case with pretty much everybody. People are dynamic.

They gave us a small test in intro to psych once to get a certain principle across - they told us to choose a person you know and evaluate how much you think their behavior changes by situation, and then do the same with your own. It turns out in almost every case that you consider the other person's emotions and behavior to be far more stable than your own. We are decieved into believing that we are very volitile while in fact everyone is fucking crazy.

I'm pretty much unfailingly social, barring a hangover.
