i made my first real vegan "meal" today! since im the only vegan in my family, i usually just throw together something simple for myself but my grandma was nice enough to buy me some tofu yesterday, and i couldn't eat it by myself. i had the idea to make a stir fry, but since the only other time i've ever cooked with tofu the results were disgusting i wasnt too confident about the results. even my family shared my sentiment, and made a pepperoni pizza just in case. anyway, i'm a horrible cook so my mom gave me general directions of what to do and helped a tiny bit with the prep, but i told her i wanted to everything else on my own. anyway, i made the stir fry with crumbled tofu marinated in soy sauce, frozen stir fry veggies and broccoli. i followed her cooking instructions loosely, draining the mixture about 3 times in hopes of getting rid of some of the sodium. the end result was really good and had LOTS of vegetables to counter the strong soy sauce taste, giving it perfect balance. i mixed it with brown rice and got my sister to try some (she's a meat and potatoes girl all the way) and she actually said she liked it! granted, she didnt eat but 1/4 of a bowl but she'd already had 3 slices of pizza. my 'rents arent back yet so i still dont know how they'll feel about it, but i'm just happy i didn't totally screw it up like most things i try to cook. i know this was a totally pointless post but i just had to brag a little. i never thought i could make a decent meal, let alone a vegan one.
way to go. keep at it, cooking gets much easier with practice. try looking up easy vegan recipes. btw, if this was your first vegan 'meal', what do you normally eat?
You know, for as long as I've been a vegetarian, I still don't care for tofu. Course, I don't like broccoli either. Or califlower. Or squash. I make a lot of Mexican and Italian food. Love tomato based dishes. But GOOD FOR YOU!!! Cooking is a skill that takes time to polish. There will be a few train wrecks along the way, but hey, life is for learning. x
nuked canned veggies, sandwiches, salads, other simple stuff that any frat boy could make. i just considered it a meal cause i actually had to cook it and take time to make it.
Congrats! My mum usually has to teach me how to make vegan meals (I suck at cooking) and she's not even vegan haha
Yay for you Last time I made tofu was the sweet & sour tofu from veganyumyum (one of my favourite food blogs). All the recipes there are simple to make and taste great. So might be worth a shot if you've got the bug. Vegetable soups in general are also a good place to start learning to cooking. As it is I love cooking, and grew up helping my mother so knew the basics before going veg; but getting out of that 'comfort zone' really helped because then I had to feed myself and there were so many new things to try.
coooooool! yeah when i firsted went veg, i didnt what the hell to cook and feeded off bread and cheese and chocolate. now im better at knowing diff dishes i can make with veggies, tofu, pasta, etc etc. a good veg cookbook is lotza help. my b/f is very suppotive even tho hes a meat lover...he makes me veggie dishes and takes me to resturants with alot of veggie choices yay even tho he does makes jokes about my eating habits haha.
