Sad songs are much easier to compose than happy songs.
    Would you agree?

More or less. Ive never actually composed on paper, but when I compose in my head it usually does sound a bit sat, but happy songs have to be brilliantly happy or they dont work.

Not necessarily, I don't think so. In the last 15 years or so, "sad" or sort of humorless, introspective songs have become a staple on popular radio, but I think if you were to sit down to write a song with the intention of writing a "happy" song, you wouldn't necessarily find it that much more difficult than writing a sad song (assuming you weren't depressed or anything).

Doesn't mean it would be good...just happy...

Im a relativley happy person, not depressed or anything,
the reason I think it is easier- (for me anyway), to create sad songs is because they just sound better. Sad songs are always so epic and dramatic with slow melodic minor chord progressions, it just flows out my arms and through my guitar, in other words I just naturaly play sad songs.

I agree with Beckner420. I find if I try and make a happy song it sounds silly and unintellegent, like music from a tv commercial. happy songs are much harder to execute.

I have also tried playing the piano, and found the same thing happened. I dont consider it a problem I listen to both happy and sad music, mostly sad thou.

Anyway as I said before I just naturaly play sad songs, I think everyone develops their own personal style of composing- that they just play naturaly.
    So what are your styles?

Minor sounds better to me, but then I don't find minor music always sad (ex : minor pentatonic blues, power chords on a minor scale)
I can play blues improvisation, jazz improvisation, rock/metal improvisation.
I can mess around with harmonic, phrygian and hindu scales, but I'm just a beginner at making it sound arabian or hindu.

I like variety in music, be it minor, major or whatever!

Usually the suff i write niether seems to fit happy or sad. It is mostly motivational. I compose lots of big band and orchesral stuff, and most of it is in a minor key. if you want to hear it go to myspace.com/jeffreymaple
