In case anyone wants to try something totally, totally cool and new -

Gwen Forrester is a tenth generation “blueblood,” born into wealth. Aware of her plain looks, she compensates by being nasty to people (sometimes). Now, at thirty-three, she has been in love with a married man for six years. He has no idea.

One night, the man’s wife is brutally murdered. Now it gets complicated.

The man, called Vince, is the heavyweight boxing champion of the world, a fellow of mixed racial and cultural heritage. He and his wife loved each other. Two kids.

The woman was Gwen’s older sister, Elaine, who had married Vince against her family’s wishes.

The following day, Vince shows up at Gwen’s apartment on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, asking for help. He thinks the mob murdered his wife (he was supposed to go down in the fifth round of the title match; he won the match instead). He is wrong. It was not the mob. Still, he wants Gwen to find a suitable place to hide the kids (her own niece and nephew, after all) until he’s managed to sort things out. Gwen agrees. They drop off the kids at a friend’s of hers in New Jersey. When they return to Gwen’s apartment, they are confronted by a man who introduces himself as Detective George Leroy, NYPD. He explains that both their lives might be in danger. He is willing to help.

Gwen does not trust the detective (who strikes her as violent, abstruse, and tactless), even though Vince does (he has heard of him, and some of his eccentric exploits). Following a lead, George makes a trip to Paris, France, taking Gwen with him (as an interpreter, he claims; Gwen seems to have no choice but to comply). In Paris, Gwen begins to suspect that George is her sister’s murderer. Adding to her confusion, the detective mentions to her that her wealthy father (the principle source of Gwen’s income, after all) is bankrupt. All the assets are frozen. Gwen is on her own. Gwen calls her parents, only to find out the detective is right.

Born into wealth, she realizes she is not equipped to live like an ordinary person; she has no particular skills; she has no idea how to find a job when she gets back. The impossible detective comes up with yet another surprise, revealing his real name. Turns out, they knew each other in college. Frightened and confused, Gwen tries to figure out what George’s plans for her are – is he going to kill her? Is he in love with her?

After they get back to New York, George proposes to draw out the killer (seemingly the most elusive criminal in history) by using Gwen and Vince as bait. Is he for real? Or is he one of those rare vicious powerful creatures who use the entire world as their playground? (And what does the President have to do with anything? Does he figure in the story at all? He does). Gwen’s instincts tell her she should refuse to cooperate. She also realizes she is in love with the detective (who is not really a detective, or is he?).
