you can do something like that w/ 6 strands...tie a regular square knot with the left 3 strings, and another with the right 3 strings, then tie one w/ the middle 4 strings, then back to the left 3 and right 3....
Also, it looks like they started with a simpler weave like just a spiral weave on the ends, then the pretty weave is more towards the middle of the necklace. I use this variation a lot, it looks good either way (I prefer the one with the 2 weaves.) FYI, it is just called an Alternating Square Knot. LOVE!!!!
