Saying that Evergreen is a hippie college is an understatement. The vibe there is incredible. You probably know already, but it is an unconventional school. There are no majors and I don't think there are grades. You pick your own major, for example, I know someone who majored in "Feminism in Popular Music". So you just pick what you want to study. I'm not sure who judges when you are ready to graduate but the place is amazing. If they had my major, I'd be there in a second. Peace
This is one of my top choices. I still have to decide b/twn Evergreen or staying in state at UNO (New Orleans).
yeah for real tuition there is wicked cheap, and you get to have control over your own education. the place was made for independent thinkers. the standard school model is not impossible for me, i just dont think being in regular school is living up to my full potential.
this chick wrote in on a website that she was physically assulted in class and the teacher didn't care. that kinda turned me off, but i'm still looking into. i know they have good environmental science program and native american studies
Evergreen doesn't offer a graduate program. It's a college not a university. Friends of ours daughter graduated from Evergreen last fall. Majored in biology. OK education, I guess. The only problem I saw, was that her and her friends I met up here, act like their better than everybody else. Of course it may just be her and her friend, shes been a real bitch since the first words came out of her mouth. Sorry, had to say it...........Alaskan........
Evergreen does have masters in teaching, environmental studies and public admin... I almost went there before I went to another college, and almost transferred my sophomore year as well..I only made it out for a visit or two and loved it..but whatever goes down you have to enjoy it and make the best of it regardless... of course the northwest is great...i still think about oregon and parts of canada too... mountains always make a place better... g'luck
I attended Evergreen in the mid-70's. Had an excellent program of studies led by two women, one African-American and one Native, regarding "minorities" in Education. We explored and analyzed deeply many aspects of Education in the USA. Very enlightening. Those were 2 of the most amazing professors I've had, and I subsequently went on to big universities like UCLA and University of Barcelona. The place could become annoyingly "hipper than thou", and nothing is more tedious than a bornagain college feminist with an attitude problem, but altogether I'd have to conclude that Evergreen academically has things going on that OUGHT to be going on more widely (gee wow wonder why they aren't?), and as for the social scene...well it can't be any worse than the usual mainstream college cultural crap. Nice environment too...in the woods, along the Sound...very nice.
There are a lot of misconceptions about this school in this thread. I am a current student, and hopefully I can iron a few things out. 1) Evergreen does not have grades. There are written evaluations. This does not translate to "lah de dah I'm a flower and whatever I produce is brilliant". It means there is a page and a half for every class you take explaining exactly why you did or did not do well in the course. Additionally, your professors decide how many credits you get for each program. (you typically take a 16 credit program, and if you haven't done all the work they take credits away. This happens in EVERY class EVERY year) 2) There are no majors at this school. However, there are "focuses" which translate to the same exact thing as a major at a more traditional college. YES you can pick your focus, but there are requirements. It takes about a year's worth of credits in one certain subject area (ie: history) so if you want your focus in something obscure then it's going to take a long time, or you're going to have to do almost entirely independent work. 3) There ARE masters programs. Specifically in teaching, education, environmental studies, and public administration. Each takes a different amount of time to complete. 4) It is surrounded by several hundred acres of beautiful forest. 5) Yes, it is typically considered a "hippie school", however, there are many different kinds of students, and I would say the vast majority of students aren't these crazy out there hippies everyone says Evergreen is full of. I'm sure there are other things, but I hope I explained what I saw pretty well. If anyone is considering this school, goes here, or has any more questions shoot me a pm.
