    it's all about money. "artists" of today are walking marketing products...i.e. i saw a reebook (whatever it's spelt) billboard near my house and it was a picture of a trainer and around it there were all these names of famous rappers like 50 cent, and all them...I was like, well, it's sad for people who actually like their music and are influenced by it, cos there's no message, no content...just buy these trainers cos 50 cent wears them. pathetic.

    The 70s had disco, the 80's had shitty synth pop, the 90s had rap and boy bands, every era will have its mainstream crap.

    good point.
    You just have to dig a little deeper to find good bands, and turn off the radio and pretend the tacky ones dont exist. :)

    There's a bloody shitload of good music today, one just has to look for it.

    Manu Chao, Splin, Mumentrol, some songs by Modest Mouse, etc, etc, etc.

    there were styles for every era- 40's were.. you know, kinda buisnissy proper, (i know i spelled businessy wrong), 50's were poodle skirts and such, 60's were hippie and flowers, 70's kinda followed except more.. orange shag carpets, 80's cut up t-shirts and leg warmers, 90's a combination of all of the previous along with lots of bright colors and cheap plastic, and today.. whatever the media would like to share with us

    Personally, i think the biggest problem with modern music is that no new bands have any of the unique characteristics that classic rock bands did, and if they do, they aren't very positive.

    Zeppelin=the most incredible white male vocalist/guitarist ever
    Jethro Tull=almost a renaisance thing goin on
    the doors=lyrics
    the dead=groove
    floyd=acid

    whereas modern bands have turntables... and umm... that one band has a crappy electric violin player

    I personally think there's just as much good music today as there's ever been. The vast majority of the stuff I hear on the radio is utter crap, but even that's a biased opinion.... I can't remember the last time I even listened to the radio! Most people just haven't heard of them... Cursive, Guided by Voices, Pavement (and the Jicks as well), Polvo, John Spencer Blues Explosion all come to mind.... I also think that many of the "Grunge" bands will be what our kids are in awe of 20 years from now.
