For the past 5 years I've had this dream in life to just leave everything and find a beautiful place to live. For the past 2 years I've decided on Oregon. I don't expect much from life and I will probably be crashing in the streets or maybe a hostel for a long time once I settle. At first I was thinking Portland, but I think I decided on Eugene for many reasons. Does anyone know how Eugene is with hobos, homelessness and/or squatters? I know it's very liberal and it's hard to find a job, so my guess would be it's fine there for that. But I'm not sure. Or if anyone knows of any websites besides craigslist that I can find average prices of cheap rooms or apartments that'd be sweet as well. Or if you're looking for someone to crash with in about 6 months :H Thanks.
It has been many moons since I lived in Eugene, but if I were you I would contact the White Bird Clinic for information. They help people hook up with all sorts of resources in the Eugene area. Here is their contact information. They also have a website (search White Bird Clinic). Hope this helps. Eugene is hobo central. Lots of hippies, vandwellers, traveling punks, etc. - and of course plain ol' alcoholic bums. Tons of social services, many church based. You should check out the bulletin boards at health food stores, especially Red Barn, for rooms for rent and the like. Jobs aren't scarce; just ones that pay enough to live on =\
I don't know this from first hand experience, but this is what I've been told; if you want to remain amongst the non-working, either Eugene or Portland will do, Eugene probably being a bit more friendly and less dangerous. If you intend on supporting yourself somehow, Portland has a lot more resources for helping people "enter society", so to speak. Its a much larger city, has a *much* larger tax base, and therefore better and more extensive outreach and extension programs. Also, more employment in general. Just something to think about.
Eugene has a large homeless population, and several places to find shelter and/or food but the beds fill up fast. Hostels are in short supply, and high demand. The locals weren't too thrilled with the homeless population when I lived there because a few have ruined it for the many. Getting screamed at when you refuse to give a hand out is not the way to win anyone over. I am happy to help when I can, but sometimes I am broke too! Sadly, while most of the homeless people that I dealt with were very nice, there were enough that weren't to make helping out unappealing. Bring rain gear! You'll need it. White Bird would be a good place to start looking for resources. Good advice Mouse...
This is complete speculation (speculated by many though) that something attack/war related is going to happen in Portland. You can probably research up on some of this just by searching google, but, I would personally stay away from there until 08.
