OK, tell me this, and speak for every omnivore:
why is it Ok and healthy to eat meat today?

if you are honest, you cannot answer that for EVERY consumer.
Each veggie on here can answer for themselves, and no one else, with certainty.
I can answer with some suppositions (vegans disagree with the notion that animals were put here solely for our use) or spiritual teachings (such as ISKCON or Buddhism, or even some passages from the Torah)that can be the root of a philosophy of veg*an-ness, but I can answer wholly only for myself, and my own reasons shift.

Every belief system has people with hypocritical actions: philosophies are ideals and standards to live up to, and few people truly, wholly, consistently do that.

I cycle every day..vigorously..Im vegan and always manage to replace energy and tissue...this meat/protein replacement stuff is crap. I work in a local stroke unit with many people who have eaten too much cholestorol and during their lives..and smoked too much.....Animals werent put here to jump onto our dinner tables. We should live in harmony with our four-legged brothers and sisters...try a body building site if you need to agree on the benefits and pleasures of hunting and chewing flesh.

so if u walked into the african jungle having never harmed an animal, do u think the lions, elephants, and giant snakes will take that into consideration when they look at u and theyre hungy? maybe we can teach them all to be vegetarians, maybe we should send them to jail for killin each other like we do when someone kills a dog, lets look all the starvin people in the eye and feel sorry for them cause there starving to death with theyre uncle cows walkin around the back yard.
the earths ground is losing its nutrients, which is why we have miracle grow, and we buy multi vitamins, u cant get all the nutrition u need from fruits and veggies, theres 5 food groups for a reason, ive never met a healthy vegetarian, some skinny lookin ones but no healthy lookin ones, but im done with this thread.
    peace.

Paul, come to my house and watch how far this vegetarian can throw you across his yard. I've been a vegetarian longer than you been breathing air.

Lacto vegetarian since 1982. No suppliments of any kind. No medicines. When I get my yearly physical, the doctor often remarks I'm the healthiest person he'll see that day.

And by the way, elephants ARE vegetarians.

I just joined today--I've been reading your forum for a while--but thought I'd chime in with the address of another vegan board I read: The Vegan Bodybuilders. They certainly prove that vegan--and even raw vegan--diets are perfectly compatible with being physically fit! You can find the forum at www.veganbodybuilding.com Too bad that other poster won't get to see it! :)

    Enjoy!

no. it's well documented that pure carnivores tend to like herbivores.
no one here suggested that animals designed to survive through eating flesh should become vegetarians.
And no one said that in a life-or death situation that humans should die rather than eat some flesh. BUT if we didn't use our ag crop output mostly for livestock feed, we could feed more people on this planet.

oh freaking please. Are you going to say next that GMO is best for the earth?
putting crop waste and animal maanures on soil will rebuild them. fertilizers (petroleum based, btw) are just adding more salts to the soil, continuing its depletion.

I see no peace in your responses.
multivitamins are for any inadequate diet and the vast majority are sold to omnivores.
With awareness you can have an adequate diet onplant foods alone. the ONLY difficult nutrient is B-12, and that is obtainable with some effort.
as for how many healthy veggies you know, exactly how many long-term educated veggies do you know? Not a Wonder Bread and Twinkies sort, but people who eat real food?

There are six categories on the vegetarian food pyramid: grains, vegetables, fruits, dry beans/nuts/seeds/eggs/ mock meats, cheese, milk yogurt (with a recommendation for other calcium sources for vegans), fats/ oils/sweets.

THe USDA version also has six categories, with the only change being the inclusion of flesh in the protien section.
The USDSA has typically been tied to it's partnerships with the meat, dairy and egg industries. Not a veg-friendly place for info, and it too suggests more plants in the diet.
