So they're 'big and tall', not 'plus. It is different. And women's clothes start being crappy and hard to find at way smaller sizes than men's do.

Add to that the fact that many women, maybe even the majority, experience a lot of changes in their shape and size throught their lives, depending on what they've been through. I know that I don't look like the same person from the neck down as I was before I had kids. And I'm not upset about that. I don't think I look bad.

You really don't get my point. Some people are fat and that is OK. Thin people are not necessarily healthier or happier. (A lot of tweakers are thinner than me...are they healthier?)

I think that this culture's obsession with being thin is more dangerous than being fat. I had an eating disorder when I was a kid because I was so afraid to get fat. My mom was anoerexic. My daughters, ages 7 and 10, are sadly obsessed with and afraid of getting fat.

I think that we should make clothes that fit people, not the other way around.

The way that clothes are sized and sold is totally sexist. Why isn't there a variety, sold by measurements the way that men's clothes are, instead of this strange, thin standard that is 'normal'? It's sexist and it starts when girls are little, setting them up for self-hatred and low self-esteem.

i think that having inch based sizing would be awesome, just to make everything much more regular/standard

but anyway, it makes sense from a business point of view. not to make people feel worse, but because stocking every size on the planet doesnt make sense. some styles look like shit on size 20s, others look like shit on size 0s. there is a smaller set of people who shop for size 16+ than those who shop for size 0-12 or 14 or so. therefore there are fewer stores and they are more specialized to cater to those with the larger size range. its just like with shoes, most stores dont carry anything larger than a womans 10 because its uncommon to find women wanting larger shoes than that. you have to find a couple good stores or online sites for that stuff. stocking stuff that doesnt sell costs the stores money.

and before you get all crazy on me, i wear a sizie 12-18 depending on the fit of it, so yes i sometimes stop in at the plus stores

yeah, but those plus sized stores are usually designed for by ham-fisted (forgive the pun) haters of boobies who think anyone over the weight of 160 WANTS to wear a blazer all the fucking time.

thank you for sticking up for me. i really wasn't trying to mean, or say that every girl should look like a skinny model. plenty of bigger girls are still very beautiful, having some extra weight does not equal ugly or undesirable. but if you choose to be big (and yes, it IS a choice, you CAN lose weight) then for christ sakes don't bitch about the clothes being "plus" size. you are the normal female body size range plus a little extra. its not nescessarily a bad thing, you can still be somewhat healthy but in general its a strain on your body and it isn't good for you physically. its not like they labeled the clothes "chunky" or "fat" size, just plus size. its a neutral, polite term. and the sections are separated for the ease of all the stores customers. it would be harder the find exactly what you're looking for if all sizes 0 to 20-something were jumbled together. its not to spite you, just to organize things. i'm sorry everyone was so offended by my comment, i wasn't trying to bash girls who aren't skinny. i know what its like to be overweight, but i wasn't happy with my body at all (if a girl is happy being a bit bigger, more power to her. she has more self confidence than i've ever had) so i buckled down and lost 20 lbs. it wasn't easy, but it was definately worth it. i feel ten times healthier and i was just suggesting that the op would maybe feel better if she tried the same thing. i really wasn't trying to offend anyone. im sorry.

You're welcome, I could tell you were just being honest and had good intentions with that honesty, some things can just be difficult for people to hear.

So you'd rather shop at a "Big Girls" store? The difference in semantics here is minute and rather meaningless. What does exist is a bigger stigma against women being overweight than men, not any real difference in treatment.

And what do you exactly have against practicality? Your waist has a size.
Clothing has a size. I simply fail to see the advantage to having to try on 30 pairs of jeans when I could simply put on a pair of pants that will fit me based on a number.

Besides, women ruined the practicality of their own clothing sizes with vanity sizing long ago.

Im a UK size 8 and i don't starve myself or read magazines (cept for Simpsons) for that matter... I mean i know a girl whos SOO skinny but hell does she eat!! So being thin doesn't mean you starve yourself.

Um... actually in todays society it does matter - people put obesity together with lazyness and lack of self control which then leads to false impressions... Sorry... Im not saying it should though cos its wrong that it is.

Sorry about what happened to you but that doesnt make every skinny girl an evil snob. In my school one of the most evil snob 'Im so better than you' bitches is a bit overweight.

I think its easy for men to get the clothes but not children either - one of my friends was overweight as a child and had to get tailored clothes for school. The girls i know that are bigger take advantage of the fact - they made a club for big breasted people only!! But i still got in :)

I'm fairly thin, but with big boobs, and I can hardly find any shirts to wear. It's all exxtra extra small, small, and occasionally a medium and that shit. I take a large and sometimes an extra large, not because I'm overweight but bc I'm tall with an atheletic frame and BIG BOOBS. I'm no weenie.

It makes me wonder if they're just trying to force me into older looking appearal and the shits I like are for little girls!! like I should be more mature than to shop there. But fuck overcoats and dress clothes!! I'm not ready for that shit!!!!

I even find it hard to find a size 8 in pants... and I'm tall, which makes it even harder. So many size 2's though... is it age (which I think)? or am I secerty fat?

are really tiny womem the norm? though there isn't anything wrong with them... but occasionaly I get in a room full of "short" girls, and I feel like a lumberjack! just 5'9" which was tall enough to let me model when I was younger and still could if I didn't have so many damn beliefs.. but anyways. I do feel the marketing world caters to the smaller for some reason. but why? are their more?

For modeling the reasons for making such small clothes for such small girls is this, they want less attention on the woman and selling her beauty and more attention on what she's marketing, like coats or whatever. They do not care about a healthy looking woman, but one thats a "coat hanger" for their cothes (exact quote from one of my managers).

But why is there such a large market for tiny women? do they really overrule us?

they always say that the women are just hangers. but that's bullshit. if they just wanted hangers, they could use boys.

I feel ya. Even when I was thinner, I was (and am) muscular, and I have always had big boobs. So, I have to wear shirts that are for someone bigger than me, or else look like a ho.

My whole point, though, is that no matter how some people (who maybe haven't had kids or health problems that tend to make people put on weight....yet) feel about people being fat, it's not their business. The point is that fat people are not some rare thing. Also, just sizing things by measurements would be more respectful and simpler. They do it in the men's department and the men aren't running around crying in confusion because there are so many sizes that they're just too confused!!

Ok I don't have time to go through all of these posts, I'm sorry about that but I have school work to do. I do want to talk about this though, being a "plus sized" girl. I'm a 16-18 for the record. I've never been thin. I went from a children's 14x to a size 6 in 4th grade. I'm also 5'10 and extremely fit and healthy. I'm a certified personal trainer. I run 3 days a week, and I lift weights 3 days a week. I have a lot of muscle on my body and I absolutely love how I look, and apparently men do as well. I think that is the first thing plus sized women need to do. They need to be happy with their bodies, otherwise they will always feel slighted when they go shopping for clothes.

Second of all, have you tried Lane Bryant? They are a bit pricey but they have trendy and sexy clothes for all plus sizes. You can find good deals on clearance or when they are having sales. Also, I have never had any trouble finding my size at Target or JC Penney or Khols. They all have great plus sized sections that don't shout it out. Actually a lot of their plus sized clothing is just in line with the others. Also, I find that thrift stores (especially around rich neighborhoods) are the best place to find plus sized clothes that are attractive. That is where I get all of my CK jeans (they are the only ones that fit my hips and thighs right, but aren't huge on my stomach and ass.) I know the Gap and Old Navy have plus sized clothes, but I don't shop at those places, simply because I don't really like them. I think their clothes are cheap and fall apart. It all depends on the brand though. Trust me there are far more options for plus sized women today than there were in the past. There used to be nothing but moo moos and sequins for me back when I was younger and it really pissed me off. But it seems that since the nation has gotten bigger most places have followed and made clothing larger. Actually, my boyfriend has a tougher time finding things in his size (which would be considered plus) than I do.

As far as losing weight for health, well that really has nothing to do with clothes, if you are really doing it for health. And if you are trying to get healthy, well you might be healthy and still be plus sized.

Good luck and if you ever feel like stopping by Deadbear's Gym its over in the health section! :)

I hear that! I get a lot of exercize and I am in good shape. I don't agree with this 'starving=healthy' doctrine.

Also, as you said, there is not a shortage of men who dig women with curves.

Sizes are ridiculous these days. In some stores, an exta large is tiny!
So, me being 11-13, it's hard to even say that I am that size, because the stores are so varried in measurments. Hell, I don't even know my measurments!!
It's frustrating because, you think you're an 11, and then you go in a store and try on that size, and it's way to small because the clothes there are cut smaller...for smaller people. It's just disheartening.

But, ya gotta look on the bright side and not try and change yourself for anyone else but you. If you are uncomfortable with how you look, change it for that reason, not because you don't look like Kate Moss. Because I mean NO ONE looks like Kate MOss. and that's just how it is.

Clothing stores need to get their heads outta their ass' and sell clothes for everyone..
