The way that clothes are sized is unfair. I was recently shopping for a pair of shorts and my choices in the women's clothes were awful. I like to wear a size 20 lately. Anyway, in the women's section, when you get over a certain size, it's a 'plus size', and that apparently means that your clothes need to be uncomfortable and ugly, as though large women don't deserve nice clothes!

Well, I gave up and I was on my way out when I saw just what I was looking for in the men's section! Over there, in the men's clothing section, they don't have 'plus sized' pants. They just have waist measurements on them. I found some camo shorts with tons of pockets and a free belt.

I just don't think it's fair that women's cloothes are labeled 'plus', as if we're so abnormal and should just forget about having nice clothes now, while men can just go buy a pair of pants without this subtle guilt trip.

    There. I feel better.

I know, it's absolutely horrible. My best friend is "plus sized," and she has a horrible time finding clothes that fit and still look good. It's really not fair that they don't carry nice things at certain sizes.

The ironic part is that it is much more natural and safe for women to be on the "plus" side.

....why don't you lose weight? i'm not trying to mean bc it is unfair that the store didnt have nice clothes in your size, but anything you wear will automatically look better on you if you have a healthier body. i used to be kinda bigger too, and wore a size 12 to 14, but now i wear from a size 6 to 9 and feel much better.

    WTF!

Anyway yes it is absurd and unfair that people can be so stupid and judgemental; implying that total strangers should conform to their ideals of body image (the very wording on 'plus' implies being additional to 'the norm'). Rather than thinking beyond it and allowing them to get on with life.

I always thought womens clothes should be sized the way mens are; for the simple reason that the latter is standardised.

I know what you mean in the UK im a 16 - dunno what that is in American terms, its not that much of a problem at the moment because im way to lazy to go shopping lol - so just live in whatever I have at that time.
As for green faerie WTF maybe she doesnt want too. Why should she is she is happy? I dunno what a size 6 to 9 is but thats kinda slim i presume so maybe you should put some weight on

i've always wanted to see women's clothing in actual measurement sizes. that would at least make THAT easier.

Maybe this is a sensitive issue but i must say greenfaerie was only offering advice, she wasn't being cruel at all and to be fair she did say "healthier".

aren't womens sizes actually sized down, for instance a 0 should actually be a 3 or something?

I guess i don't understand why it matters what its called

fat men have to go to their own store, "mens big and tall" or something

boys have to go to the husky boys section

actually this thread is pure bullshit, sorry

It doesnt make any difference if you are a size 14 or a size 18 (uk sizes) you can still be healthy

dude wtf? i dont think she needs to lose weight at all. Yeah she might be healthier and happier if she was skinnier but looks and size dont matter. I agree with her. Stores shouldnt have a seperate clothing section thats for plus size women. just because we dont weigh 100lbs and starve ourselves to look like someone that just walked out of a magazine doesnt mean were not good enough. Everyone should be treated equal no matter what size we are. I used to be a lot over weight and i would get teased all the time in school by skinny girls that thought they were better than everyone else but really there just like us. I hate when people tell overweight people to lose weight because they already know. You telling them isnt going to change anything. If they really wanted to change then they would but if not then theres nothing you can do. Also where the fuck do you get that you'll atuomatically look better if you lose weight. Before i lost weight i looked good in everything i wore. No matter what size i was i looked beautiful and you can sit there and say i was fat and gross but i dont care because i was myself and i was pretty. But yeah i agree with not having plus size women clothing and just having it all be one big section in a store because were all the same.

Most stores don't have standard sizing. I'll go to one store and wear a medium and at the next it's a X-Large. Each country is better. I love going down to the US as everything I get is smaller sized, in Canada everything seems to just be made small.

If anything I would assume that they are just trying to save money on material and making things smaller. Everything is getting smaller but costs more.

Size shouldn't matter, and if the number matters to you cut the tag out. Buy clothes that fit. Whether that is mens or womens or childrens just make sure it fits as that will be the best choice for you.

I think it's silly we are constantly reduced to numbers no matter where we go or what we do. This number is suppose to tell us who we are.

Don't let them win, don't diet because it's trendy. Take care of your health and your heart and wear a mumu if that's what you want. Anyone with a problem, well, give them directions of a lovely warm vacation spot.

    That's my size 2 cents.

well, what i would like, since i vary in size from a 12 to a 16, from a tall to a medium and petite in shirt length. can't we just do like the guys do and have a waist measurement, an inseam measurement and a bust measurement? that way i could easily fin the stuff that's going to fit the important bits and the variations in sizes are easier to figure, based on the cut.

mmm...I am a 14 now (I'm 5'8), which I know isn't all that big in most people's opinions...but it is huge to me! Also, I know it is not healthy and that bothers me most. Even though I am still a few sizes away from the dreaded plus size department I hate going into bebe or anthropologie or any of my other former favorite stores and not having the clothes look good. To be honest they should not be making those clothes in my size because unless you are extremley fit (note I did not say thin) tight and revealing clothing doesn't make you look pretty...

PS-I was 200 pounds when I was on the deprovera shot so I have been very heavy and know what it is like and it's not fun nor healthy.

That would be awesome!!!!!! I am tall so I always have to get a size bigger so it fits in length and then get it taken in.

yup. i have abnormally long legs for my height. i also have a narrow waist but broad hips. so to get them long enough and make them fit my hips, i end up with the waist of the pants just under my breasts and big enough to become a full time, very successful shoplifter. shirts i have to buy in girl sizes because i have such a short body that all the other's come down way too far.

Mainstream designers design based on a theory of what women look like. So many of us have parts of our body that don't adhere to this. We arn't built like manquins. I've always had a problem with shirts, it will be baggy everywhere but can't get the breasts into it. But that's life.

Perhaps this is really a calling for an arts and crafts project. I remember being SO frustrated with clothing in highschool when my body didn't seem to want to fit into anything, I learnt to sew and created some great stuff.

(Wow I thought I was the only hippy that shopped at bebe hahahaha!)
