..........over their career Two that pop into my head are: Fleetwood Mac -- from the blues wizardry of Peter Green, to the Bob Welch/Danny Kirwan phase, to the incorporation of Buckingham/Nicks, and now the almost pure pop of today. Genesis -- from complex progressive to decent rock to pure pop, and now Phil Collins does Disney soundtracks What are some other bands that went through a major metamorphosis, for the better or for the worse?
Frank Zappa Neil Young Aerosmith The Beatles The Eagles The Who i know fer a fact there are many others... but this is all i can think of right now...
Gong, from the spacey, super-trippy sound of the Allen-Smyth times to the sophisticated fusion of the Pierre Moerlen lead albums. Sounds like two completely different bands. Genesis, from one of the greatest prog-rock acts in the world with Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett, to the cheesy Phil Collins lead pop band. Pink Floyd, from the masters of psychedelia with Syd Barret, to the very elegant prog-rock of the Waters-Gilmour times. And above all, King Crimson, in permanent state of change and evolution. Change is the only King Crimson constant.
MetallicA From speed-trash Through rock/blues To some kind of new new-metal And it is gonna change in the future, I am sure! \m/ !rock on! \m/
The Beatles. Compare their initial recordings in 1962 with their middle/LSD period of 1967 and the final stage in 1969. Hard to think of a group with a greater range. The group which remains the same has to be the Rolling Stones. Seems they havn't had an original thought in 30 years.
Pearl jam....From ten to riot act..... I would also have to agree that pink floyd has changed alot too. But not so much that they dont sound like themselves. Pink Floyd always sounds like pink floyd.
i'd have to agree with the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Radiohead but i think that band that has changed the most through out their career is No Doubt all the way, more so than anyone else named so far i think. they've done a crap load of styles... new wave, dancehall, reggae, rock, ska, pop, hip-hop. i'd say the only thing they have yet to touch on is country.
Definitely Metallica. When they were strung out, drug-users there music was so much better. Who cares if it was partially due to drugs? Drugs open up your mind and let you see things you might never see otherwise. Now they just sound...like hardly anything. There is nothing behind their music now. It's just words and sounds. Such a drastic change is hardly imaginable until it actually happens. People suddenly cared that the people making the music were druggies. What makes them any different than the people listening to the music who are druggies?? I care about the musicians a lot, but they shouldn't be criticized for their habits. If you look from 1970 onward, you can see a direct correlation between musicians using less Acid and other drugs and their music deteriorating in quality. Bring back the drugs!
for a shorter career, String Cheese Incident. when I caught the bus it was jamgrass with a touch of da islands (I wouldn't say -only- reggae) now its jam-tecno with a touch of pop. Compare "Wake up" from 1998 to the tripe released on "Untying the Not." Only so much can be attributed to Youth producing the disc, much more to changes in the band.
