God also made arsenic... I wouldn't put too much faith in what god makes being good to ingest. Actually arsenic is much more natural then marijuana, and fermentation is also a natural process.

The effects of both are subjective.

it would make so much sense for our government to make it legal and just tax it

Come on! You just keep on running away from your reality! Weed has it's god damn side effects and way uncool consequences! It makes people seriously stupid. I have seen people turning into stupid vegetables just able to smoke the pot and talk worthless bullshit! It's no good! And it also affects the memory. I used to smoke pot and I didn't believe in all that side effect bullshit, until one day I realized that I don't remember so many things like my last birthday, what I did yesterday, where I put my keys and stuff like that. Weed totaly messes you up! Wake up and face the facts!
I am open minded and I like people looking for alternatives and stuff, but I really don't like people messing themselves up, fucking their brains, being "high" 'cause they're unpredictable in a negative way, and I also don't like people telling themselves and others that all the shit is good. Crap!
Weed is not the only way to find peace and happiness. That is not even a way, because its temporary. For permanent peace and happiness, for true and sober happiness you have to work with yourself - go meditate, think of some Buddha, Jain, Krishna stuff, whatever. Just don't spread the wrong ideas like becoming a pot-puppet is cool.

Don't get me wrong, I am totaly against those two also.
Ok, let's say - legalize, BUT - educate people on the harm it does! And no underaged (younger than 18~21) smoking this stuff, they don't know what they do. (That really is true, no matter how bad it sounds! You may change a lot and often up untill like 25 and you may heavily regret the permanent damage you have done to yourself at young age. Well, I am a bit sorry for fucking myself up a bit with weed that while ago :-/)
