its possible to learn the guitar with nothing but a guitar.. lot of people are self taught.. just get the chords to some songs you like and learn to play them and go from there.. its not like you're gonna be writing your own material.. at least not right off the bat
Hey Green, I recommend a teacher for learning the basics. After that there are so many tutorials on the web that self study is possible. Or do what my friends do and get free lessons
http://www.onlineguitarlessons.co.uk/ im thinking of using this as a guide, it simplifies and looks good. im about to buy a guitar, any oppinions on which and how much should i aim for the price? i noticed some on ebay for like 50 pounds but my mum says a good guitar should cost no less than afew hundred. also id like a metal guitar, is it better to start with simple wooden or the beast?

Your mum is right when she says a good guitar should cost no less than a few hundered but as a beginner it's not worth buying a really good guitar... You're best off spending ~100 quid on something not great but not too shit either. Yamaha make some ok guitars in that price range, likewise Takamine and Ibanez... If you go for 'bigger' names (Fender, Gibson etc) in that low price range you won't get as good a guitar for the money as you're paying for the name not the craftsmanship. Go to a shop if you can though to get a feel for the one you want. I wouldn't ever buy a guitar online because it's one of those things you really want to see and touch before handing over a big wodge of money IMO...
i'd say start acoustic.. the strings are tougher.. but it'll then help with fingering.. and when you switch to electric the string will be so much easier to finger... but yea.. dont spend too much on a guitar.. for the fact that you might be into it for a few months then drop it like a bad habit
definitely start out on acoustic. when you start with electric its too easy to form bad habits that will impede your playing later, with or without a teacher. odd as it sounds, yamaha makes the best guitars for the money under 300. http://www.guitarcenter.com/shop/product/buy_yamaha_fs700s_folk_acoustic_guitar?full_sku=518274.919 i have this as my knock around guitar and it sounds way better than any other ive heard for the money. also, whatever guitar you do end up getting, try putting martin silk and steel strings on it. they have a softer core so theyre much easier on your fingers, and they still sound pretty good.
I started with electric. I did fine, I mostly taught myself though and just played with some friends who were really good. Just search for some tabs of songs you like online. They are easy as hell to read. If you pay me, I will teach you how to rock...
okay, so i get a pick or should i let my fingers get used to it? last time i fiddled with a guitar i got mad blisters
^^^ get use to the blisters.. they'll turn into calluses eventually.. i personally was not a fan of a pick.. i could feel the strings better with my fingers... but to each his own
ill be going to a music shop in a few days then, also maybe gonna buy ipod nano soon, i hear sound is really good compared to cheap mp3, besides - mine broke
I only play classical anymore, about the only point I personally see in steel string is blugrass. Other than that, I hate guitar, and its my main instrument lol. Cant stand electric either. But if you want to try nylon string, follow Reverend and go for Yamaha to start. Anything else I cant really help you with. I pretty much only play classical and baroque music, and I am self taught, though not many people believe me because teaching yourself Bach's violin and cello suites is not typical guitar playing material. But you can definitley do it yourself, though it is NOT easy and it is going to take a few years, with back and forth interest and boredom, obsession and months of nothing "new" that might drag you down. I've been playing since I was 18, so around 4 years, and I didnt dare attempt learning classical until 2 years ago. But i still wish that I had originally started on nylon string....
Starting on an acoustic is definitely a positive idea. I started learning on an electric and even though I started lessons about 5 months after I started playing, I basically learned everything backwards. I stopped taking lessons when school started last year, but I went back to them with a different person about a month ago. I basically learned how to shred and solo, but never learned how to play chord progressions or any of the fundamentals of the instrument, whcih is what I'm doing now.
my kboard is fucking emo. i cant do the sterling sign above 3 with it, and my f2 is broken, and it was since i bought it, i also ordered a black usb mouse, both were meant usb, but came in normal round thingies. just aswell because the extra 4 usb ports i ordered for the fron were never installed either.
i started out with an electric and acoustic. if you are starting on an acoustic you should just get one of those cheap chord posters at like walmart. it has about all of them on there for reference all the time. start with completely basic chords like e f g c d a and so on.this will help your fingers limber up and move the way you want them to.then when you have basic chords down you should then move to tablature(tabs) www.ultimate-guitar.com has most songs you can think of. just think of a few songs you like and look them up. see which ones you can play as a beginner. you shouldnt have blisters on your fingers, you fingertips should callas and harden. it will hurt for a while but once they callas over it will stop hurting. electric and acoustic are pretty different i think. electric is going to be more tablature music and acoustic is more chords. thats what you are going to find on the internet anyways. teach yourself, its much more rewarding. it just takes a lot of patience.hope this helps.good luck!
^ thanx, that site i posted has the chords and really simple and all. it even has an exercise for the left hand so you can move certain fingers without the others. it surprisingly hard lol, only works from the seconds or third try, it says it should be you mind battling the fingers but the fingers fighting the mind
