When visiting Temple University in Philly, PA I met a girl that was transfering to Temple from NYU. Her impression was: prissy, stuck, rich snobs. You're going to get that at any city college, so I highly doubt that her impression is wrong. I really can't imagine NYU being a "hippy" school. For one, the cost is ridiculous...
I'll tell ya where NOT to go...anywhere in Florida! I go to USF and there is me and maybe 4 other hippie kids out of 33,000 students. Haha. It's sad. Get me outta here!
when i think of a good hippie school, i think of the town first. I have heard nothing but raves about the town of Asheville, North Carolina. If you can find a university down there i bet my life you would feel at home and enjoy what the beautiful city has to offer. Also, Colorado has many fine places to go to school. Gunnison, CO is where a few of my friends go to school and have know people that have been there for years. Anywhere along the east or west coast really, or CO. I am from Lawrence, KS and go to the University of Kansas (Go Jayhawks Mens BBall 2008 baby), where there of hippies all over the middle of town at all times of the day. Even campus, you find people from not only original, but from all over the world which really makes for a positive experience. And plus, we have a really good music scene here in Lawrence, where we are sort of a poor mans Boulder, CO. Boulder area and CO in general is pretty fire, and get just as many primo acts as the coastal areas. Lawrence gets more underground acts while Boulder gets the STS9 and Kimock, Yonder, Umph, etc. But id prefer the lesser known acts anyways. All in all, Lawrence is VERY liberal, beautiful, A- music, and ALL types of people. But Asheville, NC is the hot place to be im tellin you. Great little liberal town. Gorgeous atmosphere, and great music. (music scene is big for me lol)
Either I haven't been reading close enough, or no on here has mentioned Green Mountain College... I went to GMC last year, and if you can afford the tuition that is the place to be... You will never see so many dreadheads in your life... Its also and Environmental Liberal Arts School so basically everything is pro-environment and more than half the professors are hippies... Its in VT and kind of in the middle of nowhere, but theres another college (Castleton) just 10 minutes away and the parties can be crazy... Bands come and play on campus in the gorge pretty often, and the school provides outdoor recreation trips... also, GMC is a member of the eco-league so if you chose to you could spend a semester-a year at another school in the eco-league
University of Alaska Fairbanks Attended for a year, my friends got me hooked on hemp weaving, the John Butler Trio, and jam circles...
I always think of Hampshire, Oberlin, Skidmore, Reed, Haverford, and the like to be good hippie schools, but not full of total burnouts. Or Antioch is probably the most extreme hippie school out there.
the california institute of the arts (CIA) is pretty cool.... lots of good things happening and lots of weed lol
I'm quite familiar with what the northeast has to offer. Also, Johnson State college is one of only 3 schools in the country to offer an accredited program in Outdoor leadership, and most of the schools in Vermont have killer Environmental programs. I know of more but that should get you started.[/QUOTE] what the heck is outdoor leadership?
Anyone mention Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin yet? I went to a visit day at Northland a couple weekends ago and everyone student/teacher i saw was definitly a hippie. Its an environmental liberal arts school in the Northwoods of Wisconsin with only 700 studens. Not to mention, as soon as I stepped into one of the resident halls I heard a Greatful Dead song blasting in the hallways and barefoot students in the kitchen with dreads lol I loved it and I will be transfering there next fall
I'll be going to Rowan next year I think, and I sure do hope there's some fellow hippies attending, otherwise I'll consider transferring to a place where there's some folks I can have an intelligent conversation with, and still have fun just shitting around. I mean I'm there to learn, but the social part of me has to be happy otherwise I won't be
Northern Michigan university is fucking perfect. This dude I know sells killer acid and hardly anybody smokes mids, it's all chron. Lake Superior is like a 30 second drive from campus and the cops are generally pretty chill. Almost everybody smokes weed and they have alot of outdoor and environmental programs. And they give every student a laptop, so that's pretty sweet too
Come to Academy of Art University, San Francisco's best art school. The kids here smoke weed a lot and they're pretty cool people. Very nice teachers too. It's private by the way, but you can apply for scholarships. There's a couple people who seem to go by the hippie lifestyle, not so sure (it being college a lot of kids are experimenting with their styles and some pretend to be something they're not). If you have any questions, you can ask me or go to their website by doing an Academy of Art search on Google.
has anyone mentioned skidmore or bard yet? bard is supposively the most left-wing school in the country and skidmore i've heard is very hippie-esque. also ithaca is a huge hippie town so i'd expect ithaca college to be the same... and those are all in new york too! (yeah my parents don't want me going far away eiher : P)
The University of Kansas is where it's at! Lawrence is jam packed with hippies. Great music and atmosphere, beautiful town, wonderful people. www.ku.edu check it out!
Surely you are looking for an institution that is known to offer good research facilities in your specific subject area? That's more important isn't it? Unis are big, you will probably find people you can relate to everywhere, plus I didn't know there were social group specific universities and stuff. Isn't all of that stuff connected to American school life, 'cliques' etc? However, you call unis schools as well. Ah, so confusing!
