Here is an article from a CBS story about peole looking for their 15 min. of fame:

(CBS) Here's something that may say more about the State of the Union than the president's speech. Mr. Bush's audience — on ABC, NBC and CBS combined — wasn't nearly as large as the one watching wannabe singers face the music, CBS News correspondent Richard Schlesinger reports.

Fox's "American Idol" is the ratings king of a hugely popular TV genre you could call "Trainwreck TV."

On almost every channel, you'll find an exhibition of humiliation. On Fit Club, it's like being back in school, being teased, being scrutinized for being fat — with volunteer victims hungry for fame.

"Especially among younger people, the fear of humiliation is gone," says Michael Hirschorn, a top programming executive for VH1.

VH1, among other things, showcases faded celebrities who are fat.

"This current celebrity moment really favors people who are really willing to open a vein for the public, because then the public says, 'you're a person just like me,'" Hirschorn adds.

Why would anyone allow himself to be embarrassed in front of millions of people? A recent poll of 18- to 25-year-olds found that 51 percent of them said one of their most important goals is just being famous.

So in this new reality, anyone can be a winner, even the losers.

"Winners are always aerodynamically perfect. They're always pre-programmed for success. You always hate them. Losers are people like us," Hirschorn says.

The simple fact is: Humiliation sells.

Consider a young lady known as "New York," who just got her own show on VH1. Her claim to fame? She lost a contest to win a date with a rap star on another VH1 show — not once, but twice.

These days, it really isn't whether you win or lose. It's just that you play the game.

i don't care for the show. never really seen an actual episode, just bits of the bad auditions that you cant help but laugh at. seriously, do people really think they can sing? but after that i'm done, not worth it. these people won't be around in 10 years anyways. sorry if it sounds a bit harsh, heh.

as a singer i can understand wanting to be heard and it can be very frustrating for people to thear you sing, so i can totally understand why people would want to go n american idol, for me it's not the right venue, i'm not into pop music so the corny dances and group singing they arre required to do do not cut it for me, this year suck and it unfortunatly american idol will never be the same after the incredibly talentless sanjaya, what a joke.

I like Simon. I regularly watch this show... there is drama, comedy, HORROR in this show... that's why. There are other flimsy reality shows out there, why bash only A.I? is it because it's famous and you don't know why?

I can understand small kids interest to go to sing and show themselves on tv for kids friends and non friends and family glory back home. What I dont get is the people that watch it. As for all the other shows, and robinson and all the let meself get humiliated so i can cry, shows, really, I dont get it.
Its a praise of stupidity and justification of evil and being mean and unethical and greedy.
And when there is so many of them, and so many chanels interested in creating more of it, and so many people watching it, then come the fear that not only the world is full with people thinking that evil is justified and bad vibs a human condition, but it grows it even on a bigger and worser scale than ever.
And the results? I can see them in the streets and in the forums.
People act like if they were in one of those shows. They go together, make deals, betreat one another, play games, are mean, lie, are stupid, and do all those things for nothing at all, it is meaningless and draining, and destructiv and humiliating, but they just do it. Again and again and again.
Teasing, harrassing, chicane have like became the new order.
I dont go for it i dont get it i cannot found what the heck can be interesting in it, I have try to watch it to try to understand what on earth get people to talk about it and watch that. But I came out of the experience even more bewildered by the emptyness of it all.
Well, the answer might be there exactly: something got to fill that void.
    And anything will do!

Oprah and doc listen-to-me-cause-i-wont are another expl of this, fox coming on tv to get totaly humiliated in serie, with a pack of kleenex as first prize.
Hé, I dont understand the meaning of that, the interest in it, its purpose, and why they want it.
Even if those stuff got exported to plenty of countries now, and all countries in Europe got they star for the night show and robinson show and oprah bis show, and all this tralala, at least the mentality dont have fallen so low that it affect all sphere of the society.
In european forums nobody can get ban and nobody try to humiliate the others.
A shining expl of htis: Wikipedia AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGG!
The french and the spanish and the german and the danish: No problems.
All are nice fox, people talk normal, admi are cool and understanding, discussions are honnet and constructive, the tone is friendly, and all is just fine.
In the english and american one: AWAWAWAWAW: an excess of domination and folie des grandeurs by admis and moderators, crazy users, agression to WW3 and 4 and 5, incredibly absurd situation, censorship to the upmost, control, power abuse and over abuse of power, corruption on high level, preferencial jusgements, and artical who are trucated out of personal preference towards individuals instead of laying the weight on facts.
Try to say soemthing about the mormons in wikipedia....you will feel like making a demonstration for coffee drinkers in Utha!
harrassement is the key. Its like its the new trend, to harrass others to bang them dead, to be mean, abusicve, for no reasons at all. Just like that, for fun, or to kill time.
It is very sad. And is to be found everywhere more and more.
What you see in wikipedia reflect the mentality spred and preached in those shows: more hatress, more competition, more lies, more betrayal, more legal assassination of character, more tears, more artificially created trauma, more useless meaningless mean scenarios and more unecessarry drama, and less and less understanding and openess.
LSD might have traumatised some, back then, but that was a better trip, than those humiliation shows. Some got their ticket with only one way and never came back, but at least, nothing was mean and the vibes were good.
I dont know waht kind of life experience all those young and olders get from it, but that cant be much good in it, nor much fruitfullness in it.

This was the worst season I've seen. Usually I like the show after they are down to the final ten or so.

i agree, American Idol is mouldy, all is superficial and sounds false.. but have you ever seen the french version, and especially this year? with a certain Julien Doré? there is no possible comparison.. it's a very different program, a real show and this guy, Julien a real great artist..
    vive la france!

I've watched AI in the past but it's always the same thing each season. They want some manufactured so-called superstar, except that hasn't exactly happened yet. Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood was both stars in their own ways, and same with Chris Daughtry. The rest haven't done as well and are either making music for someone else or doing stage.

Aww, I don't think so. I think America's Got Talent allows performers to have a little more of their own personality, rather than being told who to sing each week.

I mean, come on, how can you not find this hilarious? Totally trumps Idol.
