I was just wondering if you had to use a really fine flea comb type thing, or if something like the lower comb in this pic http://www.leatherbrothers.com/images/8214.JPG would work as well. :S The closest pet store is like an hours drive away, and I can't even get my begginers yet so that hour long drive could be a problem :S

yeah the lower comb should work. as long as it's made of metal. plastic combs bend and wear out. stay away from wax. use a residue free shampoo. good luck, man

thanks dude, it probably gets anoying answering noob questions like this, but it would have sucked to spend several hours backcombing and end up with mediocre looking dreads, and find out all I needed was a better comb :S

Orer one online. DreadHeadHQ.com sells a starter kit for like 40 bucks. If you can't afford it just search for a comb. Good Luck brotha!

Aaaargh no!!! Dreadhead hq starterkits are full of crap!
    Wax- Useless
Lock Accelerator- Useful, but you can make it yourself
    DVD/Instructions - Useless
Shampoo- Its okay, but theres others that arent carsenogenic and are better

And that comb will be fine. Backcombing only acts as a guide for your hair. The real dreadlocking process will happen over at least 6-12 months

yeah like two hours after I posted this I ended up going to my friends house to put them in he ended up spending like 2 hours trying to section my hair, got half way through then gave up :S apparently it was hard. By the end of tomrrow I should still have my dreads though :D unless some terrible unforseeable event takes place o_O

I wasn't planning on puting rubber bands on my dreads, just using them to hold my hair in sections while dreading it

yeah thats what i did. and if you want, it's ok to keep them in for about a week. probably after you wash them for the first time. it'll help a little. don't keep them in for longer then two

Yea, I said rubberbands because you need them to section off your hair.

ahhh, also when you backcomb do you have to get all your dreads really tight? some of mine dreaded really well, but others won't tighten at all :S I know that after a while they loosen up and lock on their own but I figured asking wouldn't hurt

Get them as tight as you can. When I did mine, alot of them fell out so I had to re-backcomb them. The first one I did, I spent about 30 mins to an hour of backcombing and it turned out really tight. Barely even loosened.

yeah no worries. if they come out, just backcomb them again. they all loosen though before they tighten again.

just backcombed them once and leave it.When i backcombed them, i did them really really tight and everything but after the first 2 weeks alot of them loosten up. Just leave it do it thing, you might look like shit for a few months but the will eventually dread themself.

It gets pretty frustrating because you see all these photos of cool dreads then you look at yours and go...."BOOOOO my dreads suck" by just hang it there.

haha yeah thats pretty much what was popping into my head, but last night I found some random tiny little tangles in the loose ones that weren't there when I backcombed them. There jsut little random tangles but they weren't there before so yeah I was just going to let them do there thing.
